On May 11, Gold House hosted its annual Gold Gala at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles. For the third consecutive year, the organization recognized 100 Asian-Pacific power players shortlisted in the A100 List in a grand and stylish event.
Just like in previous years, attendants ranged from social justice advocates to entertainers and sportspeople. The group of personalities put their best foot forward to celebrate Asian representation. As the occasion required, guests delivered standout style moments aplenty. Glamour, elegance and nods to Asian heritage were the order of the day, but there were recurrent themes when it came to menswear.
Ahead, EnVi highlights five men’s fashion and beauty trends that dominated the 2024 Gold Gala.
Slicked-back hair
From Olympic champion Alex Shibutani to singer-songwriter Kim Woo-sung, Gold Gala attendants opted for a classic men’s hairstyle: the slick back. The look took on different forms. The Graduates’ star John Cho, for example, went for the slightly voluminous iteration, while Alex Shibutani put a Y2K spin on the hairstyle with a bleached blond slick back that we can’t stop gushing about.
Light-colored Suits
Light-colored tailoring has taken over fashion runways and events — take as an example, K-pop star Felix who rocked an all-white fit on his Met Gala debut — so to one’s surprise, light colors made waves on the gold carpet too.
2PM singer Taecyeon, Never Have I Ever star Darren Barnet and Filipino-Canadian actor Gordon Cormier donned the trend on May 11. Gordon Cormier opted for head-to-toe white while Taecyeon added contrast with a black printed shirt and completed his look with a throwback to the curtain-bang hairstyle every heartthrob flauted in the ‘90s.
In addition to white, other popular colors on the red carpet were light blue, as sported by Austin Cho, and peach, as seen on celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta and actor Manny Jacinto.
Eyewear
Fresh off his solo debut EP, Element, K-pop star Matthew Kim — famously known as BM — took modern eyewear to the Gold Gala. The Los Angeles-born rapper returned home dressed in a chic black suit and accessorized with barely-there silver wire frames. BM’s eyewear hinted at some of the most prominent accessory trends of 2024 — namely, the bayonetta glasses revival, the nerdy-chic aesthetic and the rise of crystal-clear, transparent eyewear
Designer Prabal Gurung, director Lee Sung Jin (Sunny Lee) and Darren Barnet also took statement eyewear to the red carpet for the ultimate L.A. laidback touch.
Jewelry
It wouldn’t be a Gold Gala without a dash of glitz and bling. The night’s best menswear looks featured jewelry of all shapes and sizes, from classic pieces to more avant-garde creations. Mirroring the most recent menswear runways, accessories such as statement necklaces and rings were foundational in any stylish get-up.
The gentlemen walking the red carpet knew exactly what to do to elevate their fits with occasion-appropriate jewelry. Kim Woosung, leader of the Korean band The Rose, for example, spruced up his sans shirt ensemble with an asymmetric necklace. The structured gold piece featured two large gemstones and sat at his collarbones, paired with a secondary silver pendant and a few rings.
Other stars upgrading their style game with trendy jewelry were social media personality Ian Boggs and actor Dallas Liu. Boggs, in particular, made a case for facial jewelry with a wire face chain by accessory brand MALAKAI that stole all glances on the gold carpet
Embroideries and prints
While tuxedos are a fixture for men attending black tie events, the 2024 Gold Gala offered the perfect opportunity for men to think out of the box. Indian filmmaker Karan Johar (KJo), actor Eugene Lee Yang and Beef creator Lee Sung Jin upgraded classic menswear for the night with prints and embellishments.
KJo wore a velvet jacket, richly embroidered with gold thread and traditional Indian motifs like peacocks and botanical imagery courtesy of Indian designer Rimple & Harpreet. Meanwhile, Eugene Lee Yang opted for a black cape with dragon motifs and Lee Sung Jin sported a KidSuper white suit printed in multicolored motifs.
