K-pop girl group Kiss of Life released their third single, “Midas Touch,” on April 3. The new track was delivered alongside the group’s first single album of the same name, which also includes the B-side track “Nothing.” With this latest comeback, Kiss of Life’s members Natty, Julie, Belle, and Haneul once again effortlessly transformed the stage into their home court.
Got the Midas Touch
Kiss of Life’s “Midas Touch” music video opens with a brief five-second introduction before the song explodes into immediate full momentum. The song’s instrumental track oozes Y2K, inviting listeners on a 2000s-inspired journey. In fact, the music video’s 4:3 aspect ratio recalls the late ‘90s era of international girl groups dominating the music scene. Despite its under three-minute track time, “Midas Touch” manages to integrate touches of retro American hip-hop into its catchy chorus and teasing verses. Fans of Kiss of Life may also recognize familiar phrases in the song’s bridge, which seamlessly incorporates references the group’s debut solo tracks (Natty’s “Sugarcoat,” Julie’s “Kitty Cat,” Belle’s “Countdown,” and Haneul’s “Play Love Games”).
In the music video, viewers are immediately swept into a whirlwind of extravagance as the song transitions from one member to the next. Each member’s first individual shot stuns with a unique charm. Julie opens the song by serenading the listener, lying on an elegant heart-shaped set and surrounded by blush rose-colored paraphernalia. Natty picks up where Julie leaves off, luring the viewer into a bedazzled spiderweb composed of her own newly-blonde hair. Belle first appears decorated in a peacock-inspired ensemble, complete with a fanned tail and matching eye makeup. Finally, Haneul finishes the first verse dressed in a bold red dress as she poses on an artistic set that prominently displays a blue sky. Needless to say, the styling in “Midas Touch” is exorbitant in all the best ways.
B-side track “Nothing” takes a drastic shift. Whereas “Midas Touch” is an upbeat tune, “Nothing” is a groovy pop ballad. The song’s sultry melody gives Kiss of Life’s members room to explore their various vocal colors, fully showcasing the range of their vocal abilities with plenty of high notes, a sentimental rap, and graceful falsettos. Though “Nothing” is a comparatively melancholy track, it is equally captivating in its own way.
