In 2024, Kehlani is marking their spot as one of R&B’s most incredible acts. On May 31, Kehlani offered the world their latest single, “Next 2 U,” following the release of their infectious single, “After Hours.” “Next 2 U” is a love letter to Palestine, which is a lead-up to their album, Crash, releasing June 21.
Love Never Felt So Good
Delivering silky smooth vocals, Kehlani makes easy work of vocally intricate melodies and harmonies. Singing over a droning synth, “Next 2 U” is hypnotic with percussive elements ringing all through the beat. The song is further strengthened by its music video, which features a wealth of queer and Palestinian imagery.
Choreographed by Amari Marshall, the dance evokes powerful movements. Two dancers contort their bodies atop a red, damaged car, as the video opens. They are passionate, switching between tense and fluid emotes in their movement.
And with a quick cut to Kehlani, we see the singer joined by six dancers who sport a blazer with a Keffiyeh woven into the garment. The imagery of Palestinian culture was mixed with queer love through sensual dancing, as Kehlani held dancers in their embrace.
Artistry Meets Activism
“Next 2 U” is unapologetically queer, pro-Palestinian, and pro-liberation. Kehlani has never shied away from displaying public support toward marginalized communities across the world. Extending their activism to Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Palestine, they are finding new ways to weave these values into their music.
At a protest, they called upon their fellow industry members to use their large platforms and speak up for Palestine. “I want all my followers and my peers to sit on the right side of history, I want them to make a decision that is larger than them… Free Palestine ‘til it’s backwards!”
Part of this activism is their dedication to working directly with Palestinian creatives. One of the merch pieces that fans were able to purchase was the “Next 2 U” tee, designed by Simsim and printed by Nöl Collective. Limiting the purchasing window from May 31st to June 7th these shirts sold out. The piece features the Palestinian flag and a Keffiyeh, and all proceeds will go to Palestinian, Sudanese, and Congolese families in need of aid.
Kehlani is also featured on Palestinian singer Saint Levant’s song “Allah Yihmeeki,” on his latest album, DEIRA.
