“Welcome to my wicked other side.” That’s how the genderless K-pop quartet XLOV beckon their listeners into their latest EP, i=!, released on October 29. The four members — Wumuti, Rui, Hyun, and Haru — debuted in early 2025 with the self-confident single “I’mma Be.” In the almost two years since, they’ve expanded on their genderless concept with each new project and performed for fans across the world. XLOV continue the legacy of their bold and authentic discography with i=!, an eight-track EP led by title track “Hush.” From sensual, spooky vibes to electropop and hip-hop tracks, XLOV bring out their wild side for i=!.
Quiet Down
XLOV break into dark dance pop with “Hush.” As the title track, “Hush” builds on heavy bass, traditional East Asian elements, and a driving dance beat that pulls you in and doesn’t let up. Its lyrics spin a tale of an irresistible dynamic in which XLOV get exactly what they want. Unable to pretend their desires don’t exist, the members sing candidly of drawing their lover closer and closer until they can’t (or won’t) escape. Main vocalist Hyun describes it in the final chorus with a powerful vocal run, “Hush, hush / I wanna make you never wanna let go.” The track is a siren song for anyone who listens, leaving them chasing after the replay button again and again.
The music video brings all of the spooky season vibes. Shadows shroud their performance scenes while crimson light highlights every sleek move — including all-rounder Rui’s seamless backbend over leader and producer Wumuti in the very first verse. Interspersed throughout are scenes of all four members, each more alluring than the last. Wumuti poses in front of a witchy collection of candles, Hyun prowls around a dark cave in smoky eye makeup, Rui demonstrates enchanting Chinese traditional dance skills, and youngest member Haru dances in the center of a stone array with bloodied, floral makeup.
Like Animals
The album opens with the creepy, sensual “Cat Move.” The music box and plucked string instrumental create an elegant ambiance as XLOV sing with airy vocals. Their voices swing between notes, mirroring the swaying melody. “Tell me what you wanna do, make a move,” Rui sings coyly in the post-chorus, “Just make me purr (Purr), purr (Purr), purr.” In an echo of SUNMI’s “TAIL,” XLOV compare themselves to the fatale charms of cats as they hunt down their prey. Every moment is self-assured, classy, and sexy, even when XLOV brandish their fangs and threaten to bite.
In stark contrast, “Tooth Gem Chiwawa” is a bright, dreamy yet melancholy celebration of personal identity and connection. It blends digicore elements, classic house beats, and hyperpop autotuned vocals, contrasting heavily as a double title track with “Hush.” In the group’s showcase event for i=!, Wumuti described “Tooth Gem Chiwawa” as the story of a wolf pup separated from its pack and raised by a chihuahua family. “This song has loveliness and a bright side,” Wumuti said. “But it also contains a great sense of emptiness and sadness somewhere in the heart.” It’s the spiritual successor to XLOV’s 2025 track “Biii:-P,” another electropop song about self-acceptance and celebrating being a ‘freak.’ This sister track even calls back to “Biii:-P” with Wumuti’s ending line, “Hello, my name is Freaiiik.”
Dynamic Duos
Though XLOV are no strangers to unit songs, i=! sees fresh pairings for two new songs. Wumuti and Hyun’s “Silence” is a mid-tempo R&B ballad about struggling with heartbreak and missing someone who once quieted your mind. With piano and strings elevating the drama, “Silence” is the perfect track for crying out all your emotions on late nights. Both Wumuti and Hyun composed the song, with Hyun contributing significantly to the lyrics. It expands the emotional depth and sonic variety of the album while highlighting Hyun and Wumuti’s vocal prowess.
The other unit track couldn’t be more sonically different. “All Tied Up” features Rui and Haru on a heavier hip-hop beat. The track continues the narrative of “Cat Move” and “Hush,” demonstrating XLOV’s alluring power over others and the desire to hypnotize. “I am your God, your Goddess / Ain’t nobody do it like me,” Haru asserts in breezy falsetto, another nod to their genderless concept. The thrumming hip hop dance beat and sleek vocals bring the listener into Rui and Haru’s powerful energy, leaving them ‘all tied up.’
Conceptual Sound
As the album comes to a close, the final three tracks stand out. “Tooth Gem Chiwawa (Sped Up)” plays into the hyperpop influence and offers an addition to the trend of sped-up song editions over the last few years. “Hush (Instrumental)” gives listeners an opportunity to take in the powerful dance beats and instrumental chords while “Tooth Gem Chiwawa (Instrumental)” strips back the vocals to highlight all of the production quirks.
A conceptual album at heart, i=! interrogates the impact of choice. In the album showcase, Wumuti described the emotions that bubble up when faced with a choice, like fear or anticipation. The album trailer places all four members in situations where they must make a choice despite confusing scenarios. i=! highlights the new possibilities in every choice, or the option to reject choice as a whole.
With i=!, XLOV have broadened their musical horizons and proved their infectious energy never dims. The four members are slated to finish out the year performing for their fans, EVOLs, with their Latin and North America tours throughout November and December. If fans can’t wait that long, they can be sure to keep i=! on repeat and tap into their wild side too!
