Iñigo Pascual – “Basta’t Alam Kong Tayo 1”
Filipino triple threat Iñigo Pascual’s final offering from his summer EP the heartbreak trilogy, “Basta’t Alam Kong Tayo 1” (As Long As It’s Us), is a soulful deep dive into the complexities of love and emotional vulnerability. Although it completes the trilogy musically, this song unfolds first in the story’s sequence, setting the stage for the turbulent journey that follows. Co-written with Gabriel Tagadtad, who also produced the track, the song showcases Pascual’s smooth, sultry vocals and falsetto, drawing comparisons to the timeless sound of ‘90s R&B icons like Boyz II Men and Brian McKnight.
“Just hold on, don’t let go / I’m not giving up / As long as I know it’s us,” Pascual croons in the chorus. His impassioned delivery of heartfelt lyrics about fighting to keep a love alive feels intimate yet grand, blending modern production with nostalgic influences. Ultimately, the song highlights Pascual’s growth both as a man and an artist, and allows him to resonate with anyone who has fought to hold onto love. — Davonna Gilpin
ATEEZ – “Selfish Waltz”
In November, ATEEZ released their eleventh EP GOLDEN HOUR : Part.2 featuring six tracks, including the hip-hop title track “Ice On My Teeth” produced by BL$$D. The album proved quite successful with the title track reaching 10 million views in under 24 hours and the album debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. While all the tracks are addictive in their own right, none stand out more than the fifth track “Selfish Waltz.”
Written back in 2021, “Selfish Waltz” is a certified classic from the EP. Written and produced by captain HONGJOONG, the track explores a relationship that is destined to fail, relating it to a waltz where no one is in sync. The comparison is clever, where in a relationship, much like a couples dance, you rely on your partner, except this relationship is full of cracks and even though you’re desperate to fix it, the cycle of toxicity repeats – like the steps in a waltz.
The group expresses this through deep and helpless vocals as they confess “Blinded by selfishness / As if we never loved each other […] Our love song, like a war.” The lyrics are only half of the story, with a lush electropop production that builds with the story. Truly, it feels like a monologue of your best and worst memories with a person, all coming to a crying in the rain scene. You’ll find yourself hitting replay over and over, almost like a waltz. — Vanessa Arias
Jeff Satur – “Ghost”
Exploring themes of heartache, acceptance, and all things bittersweet in romance, Thai pop sensation Jeff Satur embodied all of this in his first album Space Shuttle No.8 this past February. The album is saturated in impassioned lyrics with each B-side tugging furiously are your heartstrings. After much given (and unregretted endless replays), Team EnVi couldn’t help but fall deeper in love with “Ghost” (Thai title: “ซ่อน (ไม่) หา”).
Dripping with the melancholy timbre in Satur’s voice, “Ghost” is a painfully vulnerable track all about moving on from a past relationship. The song captures the process of coming to terms with the end of a relationship as it delves into the singer’s internal struggle and the pain of letting go. However the song’s feeling of exhaustion eventually morphs into a sense of liberation as Satur resolves to move forward while dealing with unresolved feelings. The repetition of “Even if it’s not you, it’s fine” underscores the Satur’s acceptance and self-assurance in the face of loss. “Ghost” is a two-part story installment with “Yellow Leaf” bringing it to a close and serving as the lead single of his album. — Angela Ruedas
keshi – “Soft Spot”
From keshi’s second album Requiem, “Soft Spot” dives into what it really means to experience unconditional love. “Soft Spot” explores the uncertainty of being vulnerable with someone clashing with the desire to be around them. This release has a more upbeat tempo than his previous love songs like “UNDERSTAND” and “LIMBO,” but the emotion it portrays waivers on the same feeling of infatuation and devotion.
Verse by verse, keshi soothingly sings of everything he will do for this person with the reason of wanting to tighten the space between them. He goes on to sing during the pre-chorus, “Don’t like anybody, tell me why it’s different with you.” Though struck with hesitancy and doubt about what he is feeling, keshi sings about his need for them because they are his opposite while simultaneously being his perfect match. “Soft Spot” is a song for pure romantics who love wholeheartedly, and as it is his most popular new release from the album, there surely must be a lot of love going around. — Eliza Orlic
Allie X, Empress Of – “Galina”
Running out of eczema lotion can be something so personal (and emotional). Canadian avant-pop songstress Allie X is no stranger to dramatizing the ordinary, but “Galina” takes the cake for being both autobiographical and magical. With almost five minutes of runtime, the ‘80s synth pop-influenced track may seem uninviting in this era of shorter, simpler tracks. Yet “Galina” effortlessly takes listeners through Allie’s lament over the loss of the elderly woman who alleviated her skin condition. Beneath such a simple scenario lies a desperate longing for closure and return to the familiar — something that rings true to a lot of people.
By joining forces with Empress Of, Allie X takes “Galina” to the next level in the deluxe version of her latest album, Girl With No Face. Empress Of acts as a sympathetic figure towards Allie’s misery, to the point of resonating with the latter’s helplessness. While both singers sport a powerful soprano voice, they do not fight for the spotlight; instead, they craft a refreshing take on the song. From the Empress’ hushed pleas, “Galina wake up / Things are getting rough / Come on,” to the soft arpeggios sprinkled throughout the bridge, this song is a masterclass in melancholic yet sincere theatricality. — T. Raveena – “Lose My Focus”
Indian American artist Raveena, known for her versatile style, continues to showcase her range with the soft pop and fairycore influences in her song “Lose My Focus.” She sings about deep romantic infatuation and admiration for a special someone, expressing the whimsical desire to “shrink inside your pocket or sit on your shoulder.” Raveena portrays the intensity of her feelings through vivid imagery, from screaming into pillows to romantically staring at the moon, unable to focus on anything but her beloved.
Perfectly capturing the feelings of first love, or falling in love in general, this track is one that listeners can easily and deeply relate to. The lush instrumental, accompanied by soft percussion and the gentle strums of a harp, enhances the dreamy atmosphere of the track. Through “Lose My Focus,” Raveena paints a beautiful, romanticized view of love about finding joy, inspiration, and enchantment in her beloved’s presence and imagination. — Kayla Gayle
Chappell Roan – “Good Luck, Babe!”
Chappell Roan’s meteoric ascent to fame following her charismatic performance at this year’s Coachella is one that will be studied for years to come. This year took this “Midwest Princess” from humbly-sized venues to some of the world’s largest stages. Her breakout single, “Good Luck, Babe!” catapulted Chappell Roan into stardom — landing her numerous accolades, records, and GRAMMY nominations. “Good Luck, Babe!” has a distinct, nostalgic sound pulling from ‘80s synth-pop. Despite its upbeat tempo and colorful visualizer, it tells a gripping tale that resonates with the heartstrings of many LGBTQIA+ listeners.
“Good Luck, Babe!” explicitly refers to the sheer heartache invoked by compulsory heterosexuality. Chappell Roan addresses someone who, instead of embracing their attraction towards someone of the same gender, settles for heteronormativity. The title is Chappell Roan’s sarcastic words of encouragement as her unreciprocated feelings are met with denial and disrespect. The raw emotion that she delivers in the song’s bridge never fails to evoke some tears. She belts, “And when you think about me, all of those years ago / You’re standing face to face with ‘I told you so.’” It is amazing to witness a song so closely aligned with the lesbian experience reach such monumental success and become one of 2024’s most beloved songs. As 2025 approaches, LGTBQIA+ stories are more important than ever, and thankfully, Chappell Roan is ready to bring these topics to the world stage for everyone to hear. — Jade Diones
Lay Bankz – “Tell Ur Girlfriend”
Released on January 7, “Tell Ur Girlfriend” was a huge hit on social media this year, going viral on TikTok and had a dance that went along with it. At only 19, the singer and rapper received her first Billboard Top 100 song at No. 58. With a catchy electro pop sound, the song is a fun and danceable addition to popular music from this year.
The song, depicting a mutual affair, is a look inside Bankz’s mind while she grapples with the idea of telling her boyfriend and her secret lover’s girlfriend about their affair. Adding the electro pop sound keeps the lyrics from sounding too depressing. Instead, she seems to not take it too seriously. However, with the dip into deeper thoughts such as “I don’t wanna live a lie,” we can tell the playful words are more serious than we think.
By the end of the song, the artist is still undecided, but sounds like she is giving her lover an ultimatum, so we get a catchy cliffhanger “Go tell your girlfriend that I’m your girlfriend.” This track is a complete 180 from “Ick,” which was just as popular, Lay sang and rapped in a higher tone in this track. The difference being the lyrics, “Tell Ur Girlfriend” is a budding relationship while “Ick” is the end of one. — Deshalia Murray
Yana – Haunt Me
On October 16, Bulgarian artist Yana released “Haunt Me.” This song showcases Yana’s unique ability to blend introspective lyrics with contemporary pop melodies. The track presents a haunting yet relatable narrative of lingering feelings and unresolved love, reflecting on memories that refuse to fade. With lines that explore the complexities of a past relationship, Yana delves into themes of longing and confusion, making it abundantly clear that her artistry is rooted in deep emotional honesty. In the chorus, Yana sings out, “You haunt me / I see you in my sleep / Shadows in my bedroom / Showed up when I met you,” and the repeated refrain of being haunted reflects the deep psychological impact of the relationship, as Yana grapples with feelings of abandonment and confusion.
Overall, these lyrics capture the essence of obsession and introspection, creating a relatable narrative for anyone who has ever felt the weight of what could have been. Crafted in collaboration with producer Jon Joseph, “Haunt Me” features Yana’s signature early 2000s pop-inspired sound while highlighting her impressive vocal control. The song juxtaposes evocative storytelling with a catchy melody, drawing listeners into a realm where nostalgia meets heartbreak. As Yana reminisces about moments from a past love — ranging from bittersweet memories to the unresolved questions that linger — she effortlessly connects with anyone who has grappled with similar feelings. Expect “Haunt Me” to resonate deeply, revealing not just Yana’s growth as an artist but also her unwavering dedication to capturing the raw essence of love and loss. — Autumn Ward
TEN – “Dangerous”
2024 has been the year of NCT solos, with five members of the conglomerate group releasing solo albums this year alone. The first was TEN, who dropped his self-titled album on February 13, featuring many genres from R&B to hip-hop, pop, dance, and funk. While all six tracks have something special to offer, the star of the show has to go to the funkadelic B-side, “Dangerous.” Serving up slinky synths and a groovy bassline, “Dangerous” is a welcomed blast from the past, as it screams Michael Jackson circa 1980s. Although the punchy production has a personality all its own, TEN’s natural magnetism as a vocalist and performer is what makes this record truly come alive.
“All these people keep on talking / You ain’t hearing what they say / I know you love all the attention that just comes when you’re with me,” TEN croons in the first verse. It’s known by now that the singer is no stranger to flaunting his sex appeal, but between the seductive airiness in his voice and the way he knowingly smirks during the song’s choreography, TEN knows exactly how to rope his audience in and have them wrapped around his finger. Safe to say “Dangerous” lives up to its name in more ways than one. — Chyenne Tatum
FLO – In My Bag
FLO are the three-piece trio hailing from the United Kingdom. They have seen a continuous rise within R&B and have culminated a name for themselves within music. In November, they arrived with their 16-track debut album, Access All Areas. However, the standout is their title track “In My Bag;” there’s nothing like a FLO harmony. The group are so secure in their vocal performances as they make ease of challenging runs through the song. Not only is the production infectious, but they have also managed to pair excellent visuals with it. The song enlists the help of Memphis rapper GloRilla, who skates on the beat and makes an appearance in the music video. — Ellie Forte
JADE – “Angel Of My Dreams”
Since its release in July, “Angel Of My Dreams” by JADE has emerged as one of 2024’s standout tracks, captivating listeners with its creative depth, lyrical storytelling, and visual artistry. Known for her role in the best-selling UK girl group Little Mix, Jade Thirlwall’s solo debut is a bold declaration of independence. “Angel Of My Dreams” chronicles the highs and lows of her rise to stardom under the watchful eye of a former label and boss. With poignant lines like “Love when you call me a star / you let me down in the dark / want you and need you / you don’t care / it’s not fair,” JADE voices the longing and betrayal of being entangled in an industry that both celebrates and restrains.
The track’s sound recalls early 2000s UK club-pop yet remains fresh and contemporary, with her ethereal vocals in the chorus adding an almost hypnotic quality. The tempo keeps its steady rhythm, creating a track that’s both introspective and dance-worthy. “Angel Of My Dreams” is more than just a song: it’s a bold, creative anthem from and for JADE and a track poised to become a club classic for years to come. — D.G.
Doechii – “Nissan Altima”
Doechii came out swinging with her full-length mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, in August and it’s a ride. Blending boom bap, soulful R&B, and edgy experimental hip-hop, the 19-track mixtape is pure Doechii: fierce, fearless, and entirely her own. Before the release, she dropped a YouTube series called “Swamp Sessions,” where she spotlighted four of the mixtape’s tracks. “NISSAN ALTIMA” quickly became a standout track, becoming the most viewed and streamed of the Swamp Session songs.
With rapid-fire bars and catchy melodic hooks, the track is a sonic joyride, as Doechii’s confident flow speeds along the beat like she’s taking listeners for a spin. Packed with quotable lines such as “I’m the new hip-hop Madonna / I’m the trap Grace Jones” and “I got haters, I got fans, I got stans in the stands,” Doechii lays down her lyrical chops in style. The track’s cultural impact is undeniable, earning it a nomination for “Best Rap Performance” at the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards. The music video brings in some fellow Top Dawg Entertainment heavy-hitters — Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Isaiah Rashad — making “NISSAN ALTIMA” a full-on flex and a fan-favorite that proves Doechii is ready to own her space. — K.G.
Hanumankind Feat. Kalmi – “Big Dawgs”
Pushing culture with his innovative lyrics and hypnotic sound, Indian rapper Sooraj Cherukat, professionally known as Hanumankind, entered the big leagues in the hip-hop scene with his trendsetting single “Big Dawgs.” Rapidly becoming a top charter and viral success, Hanumankind’s presence made a big boom across platforms with his fiery track that influenced, reinforced, and encouraged millions. On the surface, “Big Dawgs” vividly depicts a high-energy lifestyle as it dives into the lifestyle of high-profile status while emphasizing dominance over self-made success. Under the veil, “Big Dawgs” is infused with themes of defiance against racial discrimination and cultural nods to legacy and identity. Hanumankind serves as an anthem to overcome obstacles thrown by those opposed to our success. Masterfully fusing American hip-hop influences with Desi sensibility, the trailblazing rapper collaborated once again with music producer Kalmi, who has produced several tracks for Hanumankind.
“Big Dawgs” debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 57, marking Hanumankind and Kalmi’s first chart appearance. “Big Dawgs” continues to achieve worldwide recognition and praise as it attained over 197M Spotify streams and has been used in over 1.4M reels on TikTok. Ano, Lilas Ikuta – “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki”
Wondering who the collaboration of the year was? Well, look no further because Team EnVi just so happens to know! Taking a bite into death metal, multi-faceted Japanese singer ano and J-pop’s beloved star Lilas Ikuta joined forces in their collaborative rock single “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” (Original titling: 絶絶絶絶対聖域). If you’re a fan of J-pop and J-rock, the song’s composition and vocal arrangements might sound familiar. Prominent Japanese musician and singer Toru Kitajima, better known as TK, not only participated in the single’s production but also played the guitar. Additionally, acclaimed J-pop singer-songwriter Tatsuya Kitani provided the bass guitar for the track. With a lineup full of Japan’s most iconic and influential artists, “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” stands as an unforgettable single of 2024.
Serving as the theme song for Japanese manga artist Inio Asano’s animated post-apocalyptic film, DEAD, DEAD DEMONS DEDEDEDE DESTRUCTION: Part 1, “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” packs a punch. Through this explosive track, the two powerhouses show off their wide vocal range in an unforgettable duet of destructive chaos and emotional undertones. Despite the two artists’ distinct music styles and vocal prowess, ano and Lilas Ikuta effortlessly harmonize. While the song’s heavy metal rock sound is well-known territory for ano, Lilas Ikuta steps into a completely new sanctum away from her vibrant pop sound. “ZeZeZeZettai Seiiki” is a revolutionary metal track sewn with chilling shouts and howls, delivering impassioned intensity with each line. Ano and Lilas Kuta’s explosive anthem can be experienced on FIRST TAKE, where their emotive vocals and frenzied portrayal are shown in their expressive performance. — A.R.

Reik – “No Molestar”
When it came to singing of love’s elegance and beauty, Mexican pop band Reik took the crown with their timeless love song “No Molestar” (translated as “Do Not Disturb”). Embracing their pop roots and romantic sensibility in their album Panorama, the pop-funk track will have you dancing to a good vibe. “No Molestar” is an upbeat, playful song with a catchy reggaeton rhythm that marks a shift in the band’s musical style, moving into a more danceable, tropical sound compared to their usual ballad-heavy catalog. With the bassline serving as the track’s prominent feature, the bellowing groove solidifies a rhythmic synth-pop foundation. “No Molestar” is layered with warm instruments ranging in soft electronic elements and Reik’s distinct vocal color. Lead singer Jesús delivers an addicting vocal slide between octaves as he shows off the band’s versatility and lyrical depth. — A.R.
Kaleb J – “Di Balik Pertanda”
Indonesian singer-songwriter Kaleb J captivated listeners with “Di Balik Pertanda (Behind The Signs),” a soulful R&B ballad that captures the delicate balance between hope and hesitation in love. The track combines Kaleb’s velvety vocals with understated, stripped-down production, allowing the raw emotion of the lyrics to come through. Exploring themes of intuition, miscommunication and the weight of unspoken truth, “Di Balik Pertanda” resonates with anyone who has dealt with the uncertainty of a relationship. Its appeal lies in Kaleb J’s ability to turn deeply personal feelings into something universally relatable. Between the intimate storytelling, memorable melody, and smooth delivery, “Di Balik Pertanda” is a song that lingers in your head long after it ends, becoming one of the most-streamed Indonesian tracks of the year. — D.G.
Aminé feat. Smino – “Passenger Princess”
American rappers Aminé and Smino serve up a smooth, swagger-filled anthem with “Passenger Princess,” an October single that blends a throwback sample bursting with charisma. The track starts off with Total’s “Tell Me,” looping Pamela Long’s yearning vocals into a catchy chorus that perfectly encapsulates this playful, back-and-forth on modern relationships. Over a mellow yet punchy boom-bap beat, Aminé and Smino deliver verses that feel like late-night confessions with a hint of brag.
Aminé opens with his signature laid-back humor, quipping, “Your girl is my b*tch, she stay on my hip, stick to me like glue.” Throughout his verse, he spins witty lines that dance between affection and flexing. Aminé’s flow rides the beat effortlessly as he brings SZA and Portland Trail Blazers references into the mix. Smino then takes the baton and delivers a verse that feels intimate yet aloof with clever wordplay that will have fans replaying to catch each line. He starts off with the silly yet braggadocious line, “We go back like some neck braids / I’m stickin’ to your scalp, I stay trim like side fades.” His delivery is effortlessly cool, capturing the love-hate push-pull of his lyrics: “Say life is a b*tch, I guess I know more bout that b*tch than I thought.” — K.G.

&TEAM – “Koegawari”
&TEAM know exactly how to tap into the emotions that are difficult to articulate. They never take a straightforward approach to topics, instead covering a range of feelings within a single song. &TEAM’s summer pre-release “Koegawari” is one of their many interpretations of youth. “Koegawari” refers to one’s changing voice, and the group uses the term to represent the ambivalence ignited by puberty. Not only are their voices quite literally changing, they recognize the power that their voice holds in the world — especially when their voices join together. &TEAM embrace this transitional period and all of its complexities. “Koegawari” is simultaneously uplifting and upbeat, yet reflective and emotional.
The instrumental fuses a plethora of elements, incorporating a groovy bassline and pronounced brass. A highlight in the song is the bridge, where it dials down on the traditional instrumental components for an electric and bass heavy moment. Instead of vocals, members EJ and NICHOLAS deliver a rap verse unlike what we have seen thus far in their discography. “Koegawari” oozes with chemistry and camaraderie, one of &TEAM’s strongest suits. — J.D.
Alejo & ROBI – “LA CRUSH”
Back in May, Puerto Rican rapper, Alejo, released his first album of the year, EN ESTA NOS FUIMOS LEJOS. The album contains 14 tracks and features some fun collaborations but one that stood out the most to Team EnVi was “LA CRUSH” featuring fellow Puerto Rican native, ROBI. Hailing from Caguas and Carolina, respectively, rappers Alejo and ROBI teamed up to create the addictive reggaeton track “LA CRUSH.” The song is incredibly catchy and all about being obsessed with a girl from the moment you’ve seen her. While this notion isn’t new or groundbreaking territory, something about the way Alejo and ROBI complement each other, coupled with their clever lyrics, is just positively pleasing to the ear.
The story the song tells is risque: ROBI outright asking this girl to use her looks to take advantage of him. While the sentiment is crass, the rapper follows it up by saying just with her looks alone she has a “Saturn vibe, but no ring / If you look at me like that again, I’ll kneel right here.” The duo expresses their desires atop a sensual beat perfect for that late night club vibe. If you were looking for a track that feels like a night out in a humid city then look no further — “LA CRUSH” is sure to satisfy that need. — V.A.

Hana Effron – “Heartbreak Highway”
If a movie montage of a protagonist finding themselves again after heartbreak had a soundtrack, it would be “Heartbreak Highway” by Hana Effron. A standout (of many) from her debut album, Let’s Talk, the track is an addictive anthem of resilience and rediscovery. Effron’s clear, soulful voice soars over light production, giving the song a warm, buoyant energy. With lines like “I lost my way on heartbreak highway / I swear I’ll never make the same mistake again,” Effron captures the universal experience of heartbreak and the promise of growth after the fall.
The song’s blend of addictive melody and vivid lyrics like “Swervin’ sideways / all tears, no brakes,” paints a picture of emotional recovery that feels like speeding down an open road, windows down, determined to move forward. Effron expresses these emotions with such a catchy, upbeat style that you can’t help but smile and sway along. “Heartbreak Highway” is a call to embrace life’s next chapter, making it one of this year’s most memorable tracks. — D.G.
Laufey – “Where or When”
For Laufey, 2024 was a year of enjoying her years of hard work by meeting fans in person, whether that was while playing music festivals or on the “Bewitched: The Goddess” tour. Between touring and traveling, she blessed fans in July with a mid-year present: a cover of the 1937 song “Where or When.” Originally from the musical Babes in Arms, “Where or When” became a classic cover song, even going on to be covered by Frank Sinatra.
Rather than reverting back to the theatrical ways of the original, every singer who covers the song adds a bit of their own style onto it. For Laufey, that includes the beautiful addition of strings. Known for her love of the orchestra, the song starts with a piano alongside a string instrument reminiscent of her song “California and Me.” Laufey’s version of “Where or When” expresses themes of love with a warmth of familiarity, and in true Laufey fashion, it seems equally hopeful with looming heartbreak. — E.O.
BGYO – “TRASH”
Filipino boy group BGYO’s English single “Trash,” represents a pivotal moment in the group’s evolution. Produced by Lostboy and Tele, the track seamlessly blends pop, neo-soul, disco, and funk, creating a sound that’s both dynamic and infectious. Lyrically, the song explores themes of deep devotion, expressing the willingness to sacrifice everything for someone special, a sentiment delivered with BGYO’s signature vocal finesse and catchy, fun melodies.
“Trash” not only highlights BGYO’s versatility but also their ability to connect on a global scale, marking a new chapter in their rise within the P-Pop and international music scenes. — D.G.
Dionela Feat. Jay R – “sining”
Team EnVi couldn’t get enough of love-laced tracks this year, and “sining” definitely deserves a spot on our list. Originally released during the hot summer season, Filipino musician Dionela and the Philippines King of R&B Jay R team up on a soulful R&B track all about love and personal expression. With smooth vocals from both artists, the song highlights the deep connection between two people, using music as a form of emotional communication. Dionela’s powerful yet soft presence blends seamlessly with Jay R’s signature R&B style, making for a relaxed, romantic vibe. This bilingual track highlights a soothing blend of acoustic guitar, soft beats, and a laid-back vibe, resulting in a relaxing and emotionally resonant piece. “Sining” stands out as a heartfelt, introspective track that celebrates the beauty of love and the art of singing as a form of expression, and we can’t just get enough of it. — A.R.

Afrâ – “Yasemen”
With “Yasemen,” Turkish artist Afrâ cemented her status as one of 2024’s breakout stars. A viral hit on TikTok even before its official release, the track highlights her signature blend of traditional influences and contemporary production. “Yasemen” specifically is a mesmerizing blend of modern pop, trap beats, and traditional Turkish melodies that delves into themes of love and longing with Afrâ’s deep emotive vocals at the forefront.
Written and composed by Afrâ, with Esad Fidan handling the arrangement, the song captures the attention of diverse audiences, resonating far beyond the Turkish music scene and further establishing Afrâ as a rising global artist. — D.G.

RINI – “Far Away”
From releasing his third album, Lucky 7, to finishing 2024 with an Australian tour, RINI has been on a roll this year. With writing credits on every song on Lucky 7 and producing credits on some as well, RINI kept a consistent style with inspiration from artists like Frank Ocean and Bryson Tiller. The closing track on the album, “Far Away,” perfectly encapsulates RINI’s sound. It has common themes of love, heartbreak, and devotion and was released with a correlating visualizer.
In the pre-chorus RINI sings, “You transcend time and space / Where I’ve been, you’re there, baby” with adoration-filled vocals. These lines come after verses expressing the pain and longing that comes with a long-distance relationship. Though the couple is not physically together, the love that RINI feels is a connection that overshadows reality and instead allows him to bring their love with him wherever he goes. The lyrics are filled with this comforting idea throughout, continuing with “It’s like you didn’t leave today / You make far away not feel so / Far away.” In a world where long-distance relationships are becoming more prominent through technology, RINI is able to connect to this experience and create an anthem for longing-filled love. — E.O.
Rangga Jones – “Infatuated”
Singapore-based soloist Rangga Jones swept the Internet with three singles this year: “Pushing Me Away,” “Divine,” and his most recent song, “Infatuated.” Garnering attention on social media, “Infatuated” is a smooth and tender pop and R&B blended song dedicated to the intensity of intoxicating love. While promoting the song, Rangga Jones even took to TikTok to show his fans the complexity behind creating the song. Consisting of guitar, bass, drums, synth, and vocals, “Infatuated” has a simple yet dynamic instrumental which makes it easy to listen to.
Two months after the song dropped, a new version was released with a feature from Thai singer Patrickananda. Both versions also have a correlating music video. The original is a retro-style video with imagery of being out for a relaxing day with Jones. The feature consists of clips from Jones’s travels to Thailand to meet up with Patrickanada and includes the Thai translation of the lyrics, appealing to both English and Thai speakers. Both videos and song versions are comfortable, seemingly done with ease, and perfectly match the tempo of “Infatuated.” — E.O.
Megan Thee Stallion – “Hiss”
Megan Thee Stallion entered 2024 with a mission: to silence the noise and reclaim her narrative. She accomplished just that with “Hiss,” a fiery January release dripping with venom for anyone bold enough to speak on her name. While not targeting anyone directly, the song’s sharp lyrics led many to reveal themselves, highlighting Megan’s ability to address negativity without naming names. “Hiss” marked a pivotal moment and made it clear this was the last time she would entertain any drama, allowing her to close a tumultuous chapter and refocus on her artistry.
This shift paved the way for her self-titled album, MEGAN, a bold and triumphant body of work that re-established her as one of the biggest names in rap. And allowed for the subsequent sold-out “Hot Girl Summer Tour,” where she performed to massive crowds eager to celebrate the hot girl energy Megan continues to embody. — D.G.
aespa – “Supernova”
According to NASA, a supernova is, “the biggest explosion that humans have ever seen.” Fittingly enough, aespa’s pre-release single, “Supernova,” would become one of 2024’s biggest K-pop songs. SM Entertainment’s four-piece girl group is no stranger to bringing genre defying sensations to the table. This infectious track was nearly inescapable during the summer season, beloved for its iconicism in every facet. The lyrics, “Who are you, you who resemble me” became one of this year’s biggest catchphrases in Korean pop culture. The choreography by Street Woman Fighter alumni, YEOJIN, BADA LEE, and LACHICA, resulted in various viral dance challenges.
“Supernova” fuses a plethora of elements to create an otherworldly soundscape that embodies the KWANGYA spirit. Beyond its synth-driven hyperpop sound, it samples the legendary, experimental Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force’s “Planet Rock” in its bridge. Penned by the forces of Dem Jointz, Parisalexa, and KENZIE, the track’s overwhelming domination was inevitable. “Supernova” sat on top of the Korean charts Melon and Genie for 15 consecutive weeks — earning the title for the longest-charting number one in Melon’s history. Aespa had quite the 2024, with “Armageddon” and “Whiplash” continuing their streak of irrefutable earworms. With this many hits under their belt, we can’t wait to see what these starlets bring into their fifth year. — J.D.
Jaguar Jonze – “whiplash”
Last year, Jaguar Jonze (real name Deena Lynch) was the talk of the Australian music scene — for good reason. Since 2019, the multidisciplinary Taiwanese Australian artist had dedicated her time to advocate for victims of sexual abuse in the industry, herself included. From dropping cathartic musical projects and performing a commissioned show at the Sydney Opera House to contributing to the development of Australia’s Natural Cultural Policy, Jonze never deterred from sharing her story to the world.
But continuously staying in the spotlight has taken a toll to both her physical and mental health. “For the last five years, I have relived the violation of my body again and again in every room, on every stage, across newspapers, screens, websites and whispers until I was no longer one of you,” she shared. “Every door that I walked through became conditional and I put on the heavy mask I was expected to wear… the mask of a perfect victim and tireless advocate.”
This year, Jonze’s vulnerability takes the center stage with the release of victim impact statement. The three-track EP succinctly captures the artist at her lowest: exhausted, sorrowful, writhing in pain. And in contrast to her past releases, which dwell in the alternative rock and art pop territory, victim impact statement is acoustic and intimate. “Whiplash” opens with lines that reflect not only how her body is feeling, but also her mental state: “My neck hurts / My bones ache / I’m in a dream, but I’m still awake.” Accompanied only by gentle strums of guitar, Jonze sings of her refusal to be depicted as the trademark victim. She may have publicly fought for justice, but there are many others who, unfortunately, don’t have the chance to break their silence. In her tranquil fury and introspective proclamation, Jaguar Jonze is more than her suffering. — T. A.
BINI – “Cherry On Top”
Filipino girl group BINI reached new heights in 2024 with “Cherry On Top,” a bubblegum pop anthem that took the P-pop scene by storm. The track immediately went viral, sparking trends across social media and elevating the group’s popularity on a global scale. With its playful energy and an infectious melody, “Cherry On Top” showcases BINI’s charm and versatility, earning them a broader audience and cementing their position as trailblazers for Filipino girl groups. As the group continues to break barriers and set new benchmarks for P-pop, “Cherry On Top” stands as a defining moment in their rise, proving that BINI is ready to take the world stage. — D.G.
Future, Metro Boomin, Kendrick Lamar – “Like That”
It is not an exaggeration to say that 2024 rap would be an entirely different landscape without “Like That.” Off of Future and Metro Boomin’s collaborative album, We Don’t Trust You, this track would lay the foundation for one of the most buzzworthy rap feuds. Metro Boomin is one of rap’s most renowned names, producing beats for the biggest names in the industry. The deep bassline is almost ominous, resounding throughout the track alongside a blaring percussion. “Like That” samples Eazy-E’s “Eazy-Duz-It” and Rodney O & Joe Cooley’s “Everlasting Bass.” Future’s husky voice carries the chorus, as he questions if others in the game are true to the lifestyle they flaunt.
Compton rapper, Kendrick Lamar, hopped on this track to set things straight. Lamar directly refutes the camaraderie presented on Drake and J.Cole’s collaborative track, “First Person Shooter,” off Drake’s 2023 album, For All the Dogs. In response to J.Cole’s claim that rap’s “big three” is composed of K-Dot, Aubrey, and J.Cole; Lamar declares, “it’s just big me.” There are layers to this conflict, and “Like That” would spark continuous disses between Drake and Lamar. The pinnacle of this exchange would be Lamar’s Juneteenth concert, “The Pop Out: Ken & Friends,” where Lamar would perform these disses back-to-back on top of his top-charting hits. “Like That” will go down in music history as the catalyst for a legendary rap beef. — J.D.

KISS OF LIFE – “Nothing”
KISS OF LIFE have only been around for a little over a year, but their skills and charisma are on par with seasoned performers. The girl-group quartet are known for their B-side tracks that are beloved by, not only dedicated KISSYs (their fandom), but general audiences. “Nothing” from their single album, Midas Touch, is no exception. Continuing the strong Y2K vibes from the lead single, “Nothing” draws from an early 2000s R&B pop ballad sound. “Nothing” showcases the member’s impressive vocal chops, as their emotional delivery makes the song all the more heart-wrenching. “Nothing” is all about realizing your worth following a heartbreak. The four reflect on how they settled for less in a relationship where they gave more love than they received.
The song is sung entirely in English and chock full of quotable lyrics. A key part in this song is Julie’s rap verse, which plays out almost like a direct letter to their past love. The last couple of bars in Julie’s verse are guaranteed to hit a heartbroken soul: “Now I’m bleedin’ out on the ground, you don’t care / Rub your fingers through another person’s hair / But better keep in mind that / You were nothing other than a mindset.” KISS OF LIFE speak to the lovergirls who can’t wrap their heads around someone who moved on without looking back — fully cognizant of the pain they caused. “Nothing” is certified crashout repellent and the perfect song to belt out loud in the car. Moving into the new year, these lyrics almost serve as affirmations towards oneself to find the love that you rightfully deserve. — J.D.
Billie Eilish – “BIRDS OF A FEATHER”
Billie Eilish’s “BIRDS OF A FEATHER,” from her album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, is a simple look into loyalty, love, and the delicate ties that bind us to one another. Inspired by the belief that like-minded individuals naturally gravitate toward each other, the song offers a poignant reflection on both the joy and vulnerability that come with deep connections. Through FINNEAS’ stripped-back production and Eilish’s hauntingly emotive vocals, it paints a bittersweet portrait of relationships.
Listeners have connected deeply with the song’s themes, finding comfort in its raw honesty as the track captures the universal fear of losing someone who feels like home. With its straightforward yet deeply affecting message, the song stands out as a highlight of 2024. In a year of fast-paced releases, “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” feels like a breath of fresh air that stays with you after the final note. — D.G.
Sabrina Sterling – Bittersweet
Sabrina Sterling’s latest single, “Bittersweet,” is a touching exploration of the dynamics that define sibling relationships. With her signature blend of catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics, Sterling manages to capture both the joy and the pain of growing up alongside a sister. Through vivid imagery and relatable scenarios, she references typical sibling antics in her lyrics such as “You stole the front seat / I’m kicking your chair / I run to tell mother, you’re beating me there,” while simultaneously addressing the deeper emotional connection. As listeners journey through the song, they are taken through memories that highlight the duality of sibling love, where playfulness often walks hand in hand with rivalry.
The song takes a noticeable turn as it delves into the anxiety surrounding impending separation. Sabrina croons, “I’m packing to go, I’m leaving tomorrow / I already feel so far from home.” The mix of lightheartedness and introspection creates a bittersweet atmosphere, prompting listeners to reflect on their own siblings and the journeys they have shared. As the lyrics transition from playful banter to contemplative farewells, “Bittersweet” beautifully captures the inevitable changes that come with growing up, leaving audiences with a sense of both longing and appreciation for the bonds they hold dear. — A.W.
Saint Levant ft. Kehlani – “Allah Yihmeeki”
“Allah Yihmeeki” by Palestinian singer Saint Levant featuring Kehlani is a captivating track that combines various musical influences, showcasing their collaborative talent. Originating from a writing retreat in the beautiful setting of southern France, the song is a product of serendipitous creativity among talented artists like Saint Levant, Lana Lubany, and Victor Martinez. The infectious rhythm, enhanced by Flamenco and Andalusian guitar melodies, complements Saint Levant’s emotive vocal delivery. He introduces the heartfelt phrase, “Allah Yihmeeki ya bint el nass,” which translates to “May God protect you, oh daughter of the people.” This phrase is not only the core of the song but also sets the stage for an exploration of love and divine protection.
Beyond its musical allure, “Allah Yihmeeki” stands out as an intersection of art and social consciousness. Saint Levant’s collaboration with Kehlani, driven by a shared commitment to Palestinian rights, adds profound layers to the song’s narrative. Reflecting the powerful role music can play in addressing complex cultural and spiritual themes. The track contains a rich tapestry of sound — each strum of the guitar and beat of the drums carries the weight of experience and emotional depth. This is more than just a song; it is a multi-faceted narrative that invites listeners to reflect on love and identity in an interconnected world. — A.W.

TAEYONG – “TAP”
TAEYONG made his solo comeback with TAP, his sophomore album, in February and just in time to keep fans grooving before his enlistment into the South Korean Navy. EnVi has already highlighted B-side “Moon Tour” as one of the best tracks of 2024 but now we’re all about the title track “TAP.” On this quirky hip-hop bop, TAEYONG’s playful side is on full display as he cheekily raps his way into his crush’s heart (and ours). He’s confident, he’s playful, and he’s asking, “T.Y., could he be any cuter than this?” (Spoiler warning: probably not).
With a funky mix of 808s and edgy guitar licks, “TAP” is filled with the cool, silly energy we expect from TAEYONG. His lyrics hit peak charm, comparing himself to “sweet and spicy bimbim ramen” and playfully nudging listeners to follow their own desires. And just when you thought he couldn’t get any more endearing, the vibrant Japan-set music video brings even more fun vibes to the track — plus, a bit of cutesy choreography that’s made for the stage (and TikTok challenges). The album came just in time to keep fans swooning until his 2025 discharge from the military. So until then, “TAP” will be on repeat! — K.G.
Nozomi Kitay featuring mukade – “Moshi Moshi”
The viral song “Moshi Moshi” by Japanese R&B singer Nozomi Kitay took TikTok by storm in 2024. This fun, bouncy pop track over a light trap beat delves into the highs and lows of a tumultuous relationship. Both people are deeply in love but feel frustration, uncertainty, and even exhaustion from repeated misunderstandings and the strain of distance. Despite this tension, they can’t seem to let go of each other, and each verse reveals a push-pull dynamic where moments of regret are balanced by overwhelming affection.
Incredibly relatable (we all know a couple like this, right? And if you don’t, you probably are that couple), “Moshi Moshi” quickly dominated the Internet following its spring release, sparking TikTok trends and dance challenges set to the song’s sped-up version. Featuring Japanese rapper Mukade, who brings the other party’s perspective midway through, and produced by Gal.D, “Moshi Moshi” stands out as one of the highlights from Kitay and GAL D’s Love Letters EP. — D.G.
Tyler, The Creator – “Sticky (feat. GloRilla, Sexyy Red & Lil Wayne)”
Tyler, The Creator made his return to the music scene after three years (barring the release of the deluxe version of CALL ME ME IF YOU GET LOST) with his eighth studio album, CHROMAKOPIA. Despite being released in late October, the highly-anticipated album charted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for two weeks in a row with over 85 million views on the first day, making it the best hip-hop album debut of 2024. The album has enjoyed massive success with banger after banger, including the iconic track “Sticky (feat. GloRilla, Sexyy Red & Lil Wayne).”
With “Sticky,” Tyler showcases his artistic prowess as he continues to push the narrative that a box is not where he resides. From silent whistles in the intro to the trap-infused instrumental, bold lyrics and distorted production, “Sticky” is for the fans of Tyler’s eclectic side. Not only does he push the envelope sonically and lyrically, but the gilded line-up yields a track that has a blend of styles that shouldn’t work together but flow seamlessly anyway. Featuring the notorious Lil Wayne paired with the audacious attitudes of Sexyy Red and GloRilla, Tyler’s chemistry alongside the trio is unmatched. The build-up in the production throughout the track erupts into a majorette-like brass breakdown in the last hook that is just addictive. The track will be sure to “stick” with you long after its four minute run-time. — V.A.

Packed with her signature wordplay and playful innuendos, the track pairs smooth vocal delivery with throwback ‘90s R&B vibes, making it an instant fan favorite. Sampling Tamia’s iconic “So Into You,” Carpenter reimagines the classic with a fresh, contemporary twist, while the song’s bridge takes the tension to new heights.
“Bed Chem” quickly went viral after its release, dominating TikTok with fans recreating its sleek, seductive vibe through memes and lip-sync videos. Creepy Nuts – “Otonoke”
If you haven’t yet heard of Creepy Nuts then you probably aren’t a huge fan of anime. That being said, “Otonoke” has taken the Internet by storm, whether you have the Instagram feed of a true otaku or you doom scroll through reels, this song has surely found its way to your timeline. Released as a collaboration with the anime DAN DA DAN, “Otonoke” serves as the show’s opening track. The show follows two characters who discover that aliens and ghosts are real, and the lyrics of “Otonoke” reflect the anime’s storyline with several references to urban legends that might slip past the average listener.
The group calls back to phrases like “くわばら,” which is said to ward off evil and the ghosts Sadako and Kayako (from old Japanese movies The Ring and The Grudge, respectively), to name a few. Even the title “otonoke” is a reference to the Japanese word “おと (oto),” meaning sound, and “ノケ(noke),” taken from the name of a fake monster named “ヤマノケ(Yamanoke).” Through the track, the group captures the essence of DAN DA DAN with ease.
Anime aside, “Otonoke” is a memorable track solely based on production alone. The blend of Jersey club with the eclectic beats as it slows down and speeds back up is seamless. While the vocals are erratic, as rapper R-Shitei switches between high intonation and sped up raps to melodic rapping and goofy voices. These elements shouldn’t work but Creepy Nuts execute it masterfully. The chorus is catchy, and R-Shitei’s flow is hypnotizing. If you are venturing to try something a little out there, then look no further than Creepy Nuts and “Otonoke.” — V.A.
JAEHYUN – “Can’t Get You”
NCT’s Jaehyun made waves in August with J – The 1st Album, his highly-anticipated solo debut that’s all smooth vibes and groovy R&B. The 27-year-old doesn’t just dip his toes in the genre — he dives headfirst, bringing a vocal warmth that’s perfect for those late-night playlists. Across eight tracks, Jaehyun explores love’s ups and downs. “Can’t Get You” is a standout song with irresistible grooves and lyrics that will have listeners swaying as they think of that one person they just can’t get out of their mind. (And clocking in at a full four minutes, “Can’t Get You” is a treat for music fans craving more than a two-minute teaser.)
Co-written by Grammy-winning artist Babyface, “Can’t Get You” features a mesmerizing production that mirrors the intensity of infatuation. The track’s lush arrangement — trumpet, bass, guitar, percussion, and keys — brings a vibrant, soulful sound that’s even further elevated by the female vocalist hitting notes in the background. The Konglish (blend of Korean and English) lyrics add to the emotional pull, as Jaehyun sings, “Not hidden anymore / Beat of your heart / Deeply breathe in my arms / I feel you, feel me?” He then drives it home in the refrain with, “Anything I do, everywhere I go / If it ain’t with you / Everything is so, so.” This is definitely an on-repeat track for all the yearners and hopeless romantics out there! — K.G.
NIKI – “Buzz”
Calling all the obsessed lovergirls! Two years after the release of her last album, Indonesian singer-songwriter NIKI released her third studio LP, Buzz, on August 9. Across 13 tracks, the artist uses the album as an opportunity to process the events of her life over the last two years, and there truly is a song for every mood. While each song carries a message worthy of your ear, the eponymous track “Buzz” opens the album with a sound that is so very NIKI.
“Buzz” feels like a stream of consciousness — a quality of NIKI’s that carries her vision tastefully across her entire discography. Over a dream-like production, NIKI explores the emotional highs associated with infatuation. Most of the time these feelings can be terrifying and we often find ourselves thinking: “Am I doing too much?” But NIKI shamelessly muses over the thrill of falling for someone who makes her feel alive. She croons in the chorus that loving this person is like “The song’s about to start (can you hear it?) / The door’s about to open (can you feel it?) / The flower’s about to fruit (can you see it?) /I’m about to fall for you.”
She sings it so sweetly, but all these acts can only be described as one thing: anticipation. That feeling of your heart racing when you anticipate something is so akin to love that you won’t be able to stop yourself from humming along to “Buzz” the minute you hear it. — V.A.

Gone are the dramatic fights, chaotic obsession, and stomach-turning “butterflies:” this is a song for the reformed romantics who have traded heartbreak hysteria for healthy, steady love. It is a celebration of the kind of relationship where your phone buzzes with comfort, not dread, and where love feels more like a cozy playlist than a screaming match.

With shimmering synths and beats that feel like you are slow-dancing on neon clouds, she delivers standout lines like “You taught me love’s not fearing being alone” with a sincerity that glows like retro signage. The chorus is pure affirmation, radiating “It’s a fair type of love / Not a scared type of love” — a mantra for anyone who has learned that love should not leave you questioning your worth. The track is perfect for anyone who has said goodbye to the toxicity and hello to a love that feels just right. — Minnie Dao
LISA – “Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)”
LISA’s “Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)” is the sonic equivalent of slipping into a sparkly mini dress and strutting onto a moonlit dance floor in Paris — flirty, fun, and just the right amount of cheeky. It is an invitation to embrace the love affair, let your heart race, and surrender to the glow of a budding crush. With retro synths and that addictive “Ooh la-la-la” hook, the track feels like it was plucked from a ‘70s disco fever dream and dipped in Gen Z sass. The verses are playful as Lisa shamelessly swoons over a green-eyed French boy who has her “trippin’” with his accent, soft skin, and apparent mastery of tongue tricks.
The chorus? It is not just a catchy hook — it is a cinematic fantasy. When LISA croons, “Kiss me under the Paris twilight, kiss me out on the moonlit floor,” it is like she’s scripting a rom-com scene where the Eiffel Tower glitters in the background. And the bridge? A deliciously hypnotic loop of “Ooh, them French boys got me trippin’” that keeps the vibe flirty and unapologetically fun. By the end of the track, it is like you have fully transported into a romcom film, imagining a whirlwind romance that is equal parts dreamy and chaotic. — M.D.

EMEI’s raw, emotive vocals deliver heartbreak with a tinge of nostalgia, while the effervescent electrobeats provide just enough lift to keep it from sinking too far into the blues. “Hold On Me” is a bittersweet symphony for modern love, wrapped in a glossy, danceable package.
The song opens with the evocative line, “I thought I left you in London,” setting the stage for a story that is equal parts regret and longing. By the time they confess at the bridge, “I thought I made it out, but I fell in too deep,” listeners are fully swept into its melancholic whirlpool. Gracie Abrams – “That’s So True”
Gracie Abrams’ “That’s So True” is the ultimate realization anthem for when you finally connect the dots and admit — yeah, the rumors were spot on. With its biting lyrics and Gracie’s signature conversational tone, the track perfectly captures the moment you look back at a situationship and think, “Wow, he really wasn’t all that.” The mellow indie-pop vibe contrasts with the sharpness of Abrams’ words, creating a song that feels as cathartic as a group chat rant. Lines like “You’re an idiot, now I’m sure” and “You’re just another dude” land like mic drops, turning heartbreak into a moment of clarity with just the right touch of humor.
In the chorus, Gracie’s voice drips with a mix of sass and self-awareness as she repeats, “Bet you’re thinking, ‘She’s so cool,’” flipping the narrative on its head. She’s not just over him — she’s warning the next girl while reveling in her escape. It is a clever twist on the breakup song, ditching self-pity for a wry acceptance of red flags that were there all along.
The bridge is where the raw emotion bubbles to the surface as the song quickens its pace, pulling you into the chaos of moving on while still holding onto the sting. With lines like “Made it out alive, but I think I lost it” and “Said that I was fine, said it from the coffin,” Abrams lays bare the performative nature of post-breakup resilience — she is “fine,” but barely holding it together. “That’s So True” is the anthem for anyone who has ever had to admit their friends were right, shrugged it off, and moved on with a bittersweet smirk. — M.D.
Rosé and Bruno Mars – “APT.”
After signing her solo music deals to The Black Label and Atlantic Records, BLACKPINK member ROSÉ shocked fans when she announced the release date of her debut album rosie. She followed up with a second announcement of the album’s first single, “APT.,” featuring superstar labelmate Bruno Mars. The punky pop song quickly took the world by storm, instantly going viral for its upbeat melody you can’t help but nod your head along to and its ties to the Korean drinking game. Mars and ROSÉ’s vocals blend seamlessly with each other and complement the drum-heavy, boombastic production. Peaking in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 (the first for a solo woman K-pop artist), the party song seems to be exactly what 2024 was missing. After a universally heavy year, there is not much that feels better than singing this song at the top of your lungs. — D.G.
