Versace’s brand ambassador and campaign star, Hyunjin, debuted on the fashion circuit on February 23. Unsurprisingly, the member of K-pop group Stray Kids was one of the front-row VIPs at the brand’s most recent event. Unexpectedly, however, Hyunjin embraced one of the most divisive fads in menswear and breathed new life into the polarizing shiny suit.
Reinventing the Shiny Suit
Opinions on the shiny suit are generally divided, but “S-Class” singer Hyunjin looked like the epitome of class when he arrived at Versace’s latest fashion show. The star rocked a modern but chic iteration of the shiny textured ensembles that first rose to fame in the ‘90s and early aughts.
But while the shiny suits of eras past were generally criticized for their flamboyance and poor fit, Hyunjin’s take was glamorous and aptly aligned with this year’s revival of maximalist style and monochrome looks. His ensemble featured a single-breasted blazer and matching pants that leaned into skinny-fit territory — another nod to old days’ fads — while still retaining an it factor suitable for a fashion event. The outfit blended seamlessly into the front row, where Hyunjin shared the spotlight with other A-class stars such as American actress Anne Hathaway, Filipina fashionista Heart Evangelista, and Spanish sensation Aitana.
‘90s Heartthrob in Spirit
The K-pop style icon also made a case for beauty trends from bygone eras. Championing ‘90s style, Hyunjin sported a curtain hair look reminiscent of old-school heartthrobs. To add a modern flair, the hairstyle tapped into the wet-hair effect that celebrities popularized on the red carpets last year.
As the cherry on top, Hyunjin opted for a K-pop front-row beauty staple: a black manicure that added both edge and personality to his fit.
Making Waves in Milan
ICYMI, Hyunjin and the K-pop group he is part of, Stray Kids, are some of the Asian stars making a significant impact in fashion and entertainment. The octet has been on the rise in fashion spaces thanks to individual and collective associations with brands such as Louis Vuitton, Versace, Alexander McQueen and Tommy Hilfiger. As expected by a panel of fashion insiders and industry professionals — who selected Stray Kids as the Next Up stars in EnVi’s Fashion Power Player List — the group is likely to continue expanding its fashion influence in 2024.
With his Milan Fashion Week debut, Hyunjin joins the list of stars from the Asia Pacific region taking over the front rows during Fashion Month. Last year, the K-pop artist was present at the brand’s “La Vacanza” presentation at Cannes and made a slew of stylish appearances repping Versace at events and red carpets. Additionally, Hyunjin starred in a highly-anticipated holiday campaign, proving his status as a valuable partner for Versace.
