Following their iconic remake of the 90s classic “Candy” by H.O.T., NCT DREAM recently made their official Japanese debut. Seven years after their debut, the seven member boy group released their first Japanese single, “Best Friend Ever,” on February 8, 2023.

Returning to Their Roots

NCT DREAM have returned to their roots with their first comeback in 2023. The bright visuals of the MV paired with the upbeat title track are reminiscent of the group’s original youthful and wholesome concepts such as “Chewing Gum,” “We Young,” and “My First and My Last.” The childlike concept is further exemplified through the pillow fight and bright green robes worn by the members. Fans have noticed NCT DREAM’s affinity for pillow fights and appreciate the reference in the MV.

“Best Friend Ever” also captures the Gen Z aesthetic and the edgier, more mature nature NCT DREAM have cultivated over the years in comebacks such as “Go,” “Ridin’,” and “Boom.” The mixture of these concepts is something both long standing fans as well as new or casual viewers can enjoy.

Reminiscence and Graduation

The lyrics explore the unit’s experiences together over the years and how their bond has been preserved through hard times. Renjun, Jisung, and Mark express this sentiment in the second verse of the track with lyrics such as “The destined encounter, the dreams we shared with each other. Our hearts resonate, each of us carrying our own pain. Overcoming that all, we connect together.” “Best Friend Ever” is a sentimental look at friendship, which is a joyful follow up to the melancholy look at the passing of time in the “Graduation,” released in December 2022 as part of the Candy tracklist.

Time in Japan

On February 4, NCT DREAM posted a vlog to their official YouTube channel titled “Ohayo, Dream!,” the first episode in a new series where the members explore Japan. In this episode, the members enjoy Yokohama and each other’s company while riding the Air Cabin and taking pictures of the city skyline.

What’s Next?

NCT DREAM will finish their second world tour, “THE DREAM SHOW 2: In a DREAM,” in Osaka, Japan with three dates from February 17 to 19. The show will also be live-streamed via Beyond LIVE for international fans to enjoy.
