Keshi – “Dream”

In the wake of his upcoming REQUIEM World Tour beginning in October, Vietnamese American singer-songwriter keshi has done it again with his latest release “Dream.” The artist is known for his soft vocals, poignant lyrics, and emotional production and “Dream” is no exception. The track is a candid expression of the pitfalls of being in a happy relationship after being in one where things went wrong. Over a somber piano and timid strings, keshi confesses thinking about all that could’ve been with an ex despite being with someone that is so perfect they can only be described as a dream: “The best thing that happened to me.” The curiosity and guilt that one feels when thinking of another when you have it all can be felt in every note. Though in the final chorus when keshi cries out “In my nightmares, it should’ve been you,” your heart breaks right along with him.

In the music video, contemporary dancers are seen amongst a barren backdrop dancing while keshi sings sorrowfully in the center. The scenery is bare but still dreamlike, with fog and the dancer’s vision blocked by cloth, further emphasizing the meaning of the track. As the summer draws to a close and the cooler months creep upon us, “Dream” is the perfect track to add to your more subdued playlists.

Kenshi Yonezu – “RED OUT”

Picking up the pace with his profound sounds and introspective lyricism, Kenshi Yonezu takes a darker turn in the J-pop scene. If you’re a fan of his riveting tracks “KICK BACK” and “Shinigami,” “RED OUT” is the perfect frenzy-packed track you need on your playlist. Kicking off with a groovy bassline, the song goes into an expertly layered arrangement of instruments with Kenshi’s flexible voice bringing the song all together. From snappy synths to heavy backbeats, “RED OUT” poses itself as an aggressive rock-esque song fueled with urgency and intense energy. Leading into the song’s outro, Kenshi shows off an electrifying vocal performance as he repeatedly sings “Get out,” increasing the volume in his voice into a hoarse scream with the instruments following in suit — going off into a chilling silence before the chorus fills the silence one last time.

Alongside its analytical lyrics, the accompanying music video was directed by Kyotaro Hayashi who has previously worked on Yonezu’s hits “M87” and “TEENAGE RIOT.” Kyotaro once again presents a captivating video and visual experience, heightening the tracks vigor and depth with its visual feast of strobe lights and heavy atmosphere. “RED OUT” serves as the lead single in his upcoming sixth album LOST CORNER, which is scheduled for release on August 21. “RED OUT” has also been chosen as the theme song for Spotify’s upcoming commercial campaign, which features world famous dancer THE D SoraKi.

Fordo – “Obvious”

Caught in a complicated romance this summer? In a new single, artist Fordo brings back nostalgia of the 2000s heartbreak anthems. In a desperate plea, he asks for clarification in their relationship. Just as Fordo’s ready to take the next step, his lover enjoys the chase. “I sacrificed my heart for this,” he claims in the chorus. “Didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I make it obvious?” Though his lover continues to say they love him, it’s not reciprocated equally.

Full band instrumentation and trumpets marks the track as upbeat, deceptive of its true theme. The fanfare sprinkled throughout the song raises the tension between Fordo and his not-quite-lover. While Fordo is confident and upfront about his feelings, his lover continues to push and pull. Escalating chord progression and changing flow, he expresses the instability in this relationship for both parties involved. Ending with sirens, whistles, and record scratching, Fordo signals the battle left to come. If you want a song to dramatically jam out to, it’s “OBVIOUS,” you should listen to this one.

MIRANI – “Hit Me Up (Ft. MINGI of ATEEZ)”

BamBam – “Last Parade”

Soloist BamBam is back, displaying his power in performance. Using the persona of “BAMESIS,” he brings a new element to his authority. BamBam blends the style of renaissance paintings with fantasy and cyberpunk aesthetics in his music video. He is shown as both a government leader as well as an anarchist, both ready to battle. From dystopian militant visuals, he transitions into a more rugged appearance. The choreography is just as expressive of his two sides. BamBam uses the sharp angles in vogueing as a representation of the rigid authoritative figure. Meanwhile, his anarchist self seems to show through the more fluid and fun elements of the dance.

Opening with choral chanting and the ominous chirps of crows, the song instantly creates an eerie mood. With a transition into a simple hiphop beat, the percussion mimics the rhythm of militant marching. Leading into the chorus, the tempo speeds up before the beat drops. As he says in the lyrics, BamBam is calling listeners to join him in one last attempt to celebrate their freedom. If you’re looking for a new party anthem to add to your playlist, consider one “Last Parade.”
