EXO’s member D.O. made his solo debut on July 26 with the album 공감 (Empathy). Although “Rose” is the title track, the Spanish song “Si Fueras Mía” immediately became a favorite among Latinx and Spanish-speaking fans. It successfully charted higher than the title track on iTunes in countries like Ecuador and Perú.

The Story Behind

This romantic ballad portrays the feelings of a person whose lover is not there with them. D.O. expresses all the grandiose things he would do for the woman he loves if only he could be with her. The lyrics resonated with Latinx fans, whose love for their favorite artists is restrained by the distance and the language that separate them. EXO’s activities have considerably decreased since the members started their military service, so this hiatus has made the fans’ longing feelings stronger.

The song was previously announced through EXO’s Twitter as an alternative version of “It’s Love,” another song on the album. It was written, arranged, and composed by Cindy López, Danny Saucedo, Andreas Öberg, and Maria Marcus. The latter revealed through her Instagram stories that “Si Fueras Mía” has been in the works for almost 10 years.

A Gift for International Fans

D.O. himself talked about how on board he was to work on this multilingual project. “When I first heard those songs, the guide tracks were in English and Spanish, but the lyrics and vibes felt great, so I wanted to sing them for everyone.”

Over the years, D.O. has won the heart of his Spanish-speaking fans. He had previously sung in Spanish at the Arena Ciudad de México during Music Bank 2014 along with EXO-K members. They performed “Sabor A Mí” by Mexican singer Luis Miguel. This stage was so popular, the official YouTube video gathered over six million views and was included in the setlist of EXO’s concert when they returned to Mexico in 2017.
