In the series “Style Profile,” celebrities exclusively share details of their fashion and beauty with EnVi. In this installment, the members of the K-pop group ARTMS offer a picture of their personal style, sartorial inspirations and must-have items as they embark on their world tour, “Moonshot.” 

Ye-rim Choi, mononymously known as Choerry, is the youngest member of K-pop quintet ARTMS. Since her debut with the upbeat “Love Cherry Motion,” Choerry has explored various genres across rotating music units. As a former part of LOONA and current member of ARTMS, Choerry has released music individually and alongside her group mates. With ARTMS’ highly-anticipated debut album <Dall>, released in May, and their ongoing world tour “Moonshot,” the multifaceted singer, rapper and dancer has entered a new style era. 

In this EnVi-exclusive interview, Choerry discusses her personal style, recent must-have items and the early-2000s aesthetic influencing <Dall>. 

On “Virtual Angel”

“We wore a lot of light-colored [eye] lenses to accentuate the [image of an] angel,” Choerry explains over a  Zoom call, opening the conversation about ARTMS’ latest title track, “Virtual Angel.” The song’s teaser images and music video channel the title — the impact of Y2K trends, discotheque and cybercore are identifiable throughout the group’s recent release. 

From the instrumental’s dreamy synthpop melody to the music video’s sets, elements of the early 2000s are strategically integrated into ARTMS’ newest song. Old television sets, tech artifacts, pastel colors and overall retro-futuristic imagery contribute to the track’s “virtual” label. “We really like it because it added a dreamy and mysterious image,” Choerry says of the music video’s Y2K influences.

These themes are translated into performances through the group’s styling. In teaser photos, Choerry embodies the lighter side of “Virtual Angel” with blonde hair and peachy makeup. Then, for the music video and live performances, Choerry switched things up, sporting hair black and creating color contrast with blush-focused makeup — a Gen Z-approved staple.

Choerry often favors feminine silhouettes on stage. For “Virtual Angel,” the looks included Y2K-style mini skirts, cropped track jackets and layered textures. While discussing the song’s music video, however, rather than a specific outfit or beauty look, one particular scene stands out the most for the 23-year-old singer: performing on a rooftop. 

The open-sky backdrop was important in connecting with the music video’s mythical elements. What appears to be a seamless execution on camera was actually a coordinated display of flexibility by the group and crew. “It wasn’t raining on any of the other days,” Choerry recalls. “But of all days, it rained on the day of our outdoor filming. […] We ended up dancing in the rain.” In the end, the group’s dedication contributed to the storytelling. Scenes of the quintet performing in the rain are smoothly interchanged with other elements of nature, bringing to life the image of supernatural angels.

On ARTMS’ Debut Album

ARTMS extended their synth-backed debut beyond “Virtual Angel” and into <Dall>, the group’s first album. Released on May 31, <Dall> is an 11-track record that introduces ARTMS’ concept: melodic, synth-heavy and dreamy. Much of the album emanates a warm, glowing feeling, credited to the instrumental synths and softly layered harmonies. Out of the 11 songs on <Dall>, “Sparkle” is the song that Choerry identifies with the most. With strong synth and nostalgic instrumental, “Sparkle” is an enticing, upbeat love song — one the group performed right before our call, as evidenced by Choerry’s stylish tracksuit and perfect hair waves.

“I like a mysterious, but still bright, vibe, which is why I choose ‘Sparkle.’ I like to wear cute or brightly colored clothes — if you look in my closet, there are a lot of those,” Choerry says. A cursory look through her personal Instagram corroborates her fashion preferences. When she’s not on stage, Choerry masters the intersection of comfort and chic. Accordingly, a combination of adventurous textures, feminine silhouettes and cute motifs frequently appears in her feed. 

Choerry approaches fashion with an independent mindset. That is, rather than turning to any specific celebrity for inspiration, she trusts her intuition. After deciding what she likes, the singer relies on her judgment to decide what pieces complement each other best. “If I’m out shopping and I see something pretty, I buy it,” she says breezily. “I’m always making an effort to coordinate my outfits.” 

On Personal Preferences

Whereas Choerry’s sense of fashion embraces vivid colors and statement pieces, her approach to beauty is simpler. As per Choerry, she has recently focused on the foundations of skincare. “I’ve been into basic products — I’ve been looking more closely at the ingredients of products before buying them.”

This shift is reflected in her beauty routine. After a brief moment to reflect on her ultimate wellness tip, a lightbulb seems to turn on in Choerry’s head: “Cleansing thoroughly before sleep is non-negotiable,” she says. One must-have item helping Choerry achieve healthier skin — arguably the best foundation for any makeup routine — is a cosrx toner pad. As for something that enhances her makeup once it’s on? Look no further than one of the many face glow dew sticks that have recently gone viral in South Korea.

Choerry also shares a few things she would like to try in the future with ARTMS. First, she says excitedly, she wants to dye her hair pink again. But looking at the bigger picture, Choerry looks forward to venturing into new concepts. “I want to try a band concept or something like a Japanese anime’s OST,” she says. “Something with a thrilling feeling.”

In her seven-year career, Choerry has worked on records spanning the genres of classic pop, future bass and even trap. The young singer has always embued her public persona with her personal touch. In off-duty photoshoots, Choerry shares her style ventures, favorite pastimes and international adventures. As ARTMS continues the overseas portion of their “Moonshot” world tour, Choerry is sharing the experience on her own terms — with scrapbook-style Instagram posts and behind-the-scenes photos to keep fans in the loop about her goings-on.
