New York’s Brooklyn Paramount has hosted many acts in its short lifespan, but on Tuesday night, it was all eyes on K-pop group tripleS. Though tripleS itself is a massive group of 24, this tour only took eight members — SeoYeon, NaKyoung, DaHyun, Nien, JooBin, HaYeon, Sullin, and SeoAh — across North America on the “Come True” tour.

Fans, called wavs, filled the venue, chatting eagerly about their signed vinyls and sharing batteries for their lightsticks. It was a warm atmosphere, despite the freezing New York winter outside. While many K-pop shows are often for superfans, the TripleS crowd was a gathering of fans of various groups, as they waved lightsticks from acts like TWICE, LOONA, Yves, and (G)I-DLE. The crowd was a welcoming one, like an embodiment of TripleS’s concept as a versatile group.

top songs

Rising“: The song itself is a high-energy one, and from the first beat of the song’s catchy “la la la la la” intro, fans were on their feet and dancing along. However, it wasn’t just the song’s popularity that had fans moving, it was the eight members’ energetic take on it. Normally performed by the full 24-member group, SeoYeon, NaKyoung, DaHyun, Nien, JooBin, HaYeon, Sullin, and SeoAh more than filled the large shoes of their group.

Cherry Talk“: +(KR)ystal Eyes cover with SeoYeon, Nien, JooBin, and SeoAh, Cherry Talk was a bright and playful performance that highlighted tripleS’s charm. Syrupy sweet but not sickly, the song was catchy and the performance bright in a way that uplifted the crowd’s energy and got things moving at the midway point of the set.

Door“: This was a cover of the tripleS subunit Aria’s debut, featuring members SeoYeon, NaKyoung, DaHyun, Nien, and HaYeon. It let the member’s honey-toned voices shine and left the crowd rapt in attention. It’s not easy to command an entire venue’s attention with a softer voice, but the five members did it with ease, as fans swayed along in their seats.

high notes

The middle part of the set, where members moved so fluidly between songs and subgroups it was practically seamless. It highlights tripleS’s strength as a dynamic, ever-changing group. Starting with SeoYeon, NaKyoung, DaHyun, Nien, and HaYeon’s take on “Door,” different combinations of members took to the stage to flow through tripleS subunit tracks like “Just Do It” by NXT and “Touch” by +(KR)ystal Eyes.

TripleS’s main concept is one of flexibility: a 24 member group comprised (currently) of nine active subunits each with unique concepts and strengths. Yet each member can excel across the board. Songs like “Generation” or “Rolex,” which are originally performed by Acid Angel from Asia members YooYeon, NaKyung, YuBin, and HyeRin, are here covered by different arrangements of the eight members on tour. While NaKayung performs her own subunit songs, she also steps in to perform “Touch” by +(KR)ystal Eyes.

It’s a strong way to show the members individual versatility, switching from ballads to upbeat dance songs yet excelling at both. But it also explains tripleS’s entire concept so succinctly to those in the crowd that may be unfamiliar: this is a group that cannot be defined in the traditional sense, but also doesn’t need to be.

energy levels

High but not overwhelming. Fans were excited to see some members again, and to meet others for the first time. They were up and moving when the energy allowed it, but quiet and reverent for quieter songs. Fans didn’t allow their excitement to overflow, and members were given space to banter with the audience more without being cheered over. It was clear how deeply fans loved tripleS, and how much that love was returned.
