Concert Recap: Zoe Wees is New York Pretty at the Mercury Lounge
On August 3, German singer-songwriter Zoe Wees took the stage at the sold out Mercury Lounge with an opening performance from singer-songwriter Penelope Q. The cozy and intimate venue was fitting for the singers’ first U.S tour. Even before the concert, fans were filled with energy, with some waiting at the venue for upwards of 5 hours.
An Intimate Opening Performance
Equipped with her guitar, Penelope Q offered fans acoustic renditions of alternative pop songs like “One Degree” and “Service Road To Boston.” At many times throughout the performance, fans could be seen swaying along with the music. With a smooth voice, she managed to pack passion into her delivery.
Penelope Q then launched into one of her own songs, “My Shampoo,” which was a melancholy pop song. Admitting that the song was a little moodier than her usual fare, she began strumming at her guitar. The crowd watched intently as she played, holding drinks in hand while nodding to Penelope Q’s voice. What’s special about Penelope Q is that even when she’s sitting with nothing but a guitar and her voice, she manages to capture the attention of the crowds she performs to.
Girls Like Zoe Wees
If the energy at the Mercury lounge could be explained in one word, it would be euphoric. When the concert hall doors opened, Zoe Wees and her band made their way to the stage. Immediately, fans erupted in applause and screams. Eyes gleamed and glistened with disbelief that the artist they loved was standing right in front of them.
Zoe took to the stage with a big smile, and her more alternative fashion immediately stood out. Long green braids flowed down her back, almost touching her Balenciaga Triple S shoes. Her extendo green acrylics were a nice finishing touch to her outfit. With a big grin, she told the crowd, “You guys look so good that’s crazy!”.
For anyone who wasn’t already familiar with Zoe Wees, what came next would be an incredible surprise. While she had introduced herself with a cute personality and soft voice, Zoe flipped the switch once she started performing with a strong stage presence and charisma that was unmatched. Starting off her set with “Girls Like Us,” Zoe had the crowd singing passionately with her. It was clear from her performance that she has the skills to become a leader within the newest generation of musical acts. Displaying her vocal prowess, she easily executed intricate runs and high notes throughout her set.
A Band That Knows How It Goes
Accompanying Zoe was a band that gave her impressive catalog of music an anthemic vibe. Composed of guitarist Kyle Ward, Pianist BLK BOK, and drummer Havyl, the band’s performance was impressive. It was impossible not to be drawn in by the magic of these three musicians. Kyle especially played off the energy of the crowd, often finding himself engaging with the fans or locking arms with Zoe. BLK BOK and Havyl also displayed undeniable charm while grooving to the music.
Family Ties
Songs like “Hold Me Like You Used To” and “Daddy’s Eyes” were dedicated to Zoe’s family members. Looking out at the fans, she shared the meaning of “Hold Me Like You Used To” and reminisced about her late great-grandmother. The lyrics tell a story of grief and memories, which was emphasized even further with Zoe’s delivery. The rasp in her voice encapsulated the pain of losing someone close.
Tunes like “Daddy’s Eyes” explore her relationship with her father, who had not been present in her life. Before launching into the song, Zoe revealed that she had been so excited and happy when she met her father at 16. The song’s hard-hitting lyrics like “I don’t want to cry from my daddy’s eyes” made her admission all the more significant, as they show just how much of an impact his absence has had on her life. Zoe’s ardent vocals captured the crowd, who could empathize with the lyrics of the song.
Zoe Wees Is In Control
Wrapping up her set with songs like “Third Wheel,” “Ghost,” and “Control,” Zoe proved to her naysayers that she is not only a master at her craft, but also has a distinct care towards her fans who support her work. At just 20 years old, Zoe Wees is already making her mark in the music industry step by step. The future looks incredibly bright for Zoe Wees.
