BLACKPINK’s Jennie Makes a Case for the Little White Dress at the Met Gala
K-pop icons BLACKPINK are in no way strangers to the spotlight. Whether they are breaking records, delivering iconic performances, or dazzling at fashion events, the four-member act never fails to command attention. Gracing the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s biggest night, Jennie Kim, otherwise known as BLACKPINK’s Jennie, brought her style A-game to the Met Gala’s red carpet.
Dubbed American fashion’s most important event, the gala gathered an extraordinary group of world-class stars and naturally, that included some of Asia’s biggest icons. As a seasoned fashionista, Jennie was under the spotlight on her Met Gala debut. The singer sported a Chanel mini dress that — following the theme — honored the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.
Jennie’s Met Gala Debut
This year’s Met Gala commemorated the opening of the “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Given the designer’s long tenure at Chanel and Jennie’s title as the brand’s global ambassador, it only made sense that she was present at the event. The superstar interpreted the theme in a white strapless mini-dress that highlighted several house codes.
The outfit recreated a look from Chanel’s Fall-Winter 1990 runway and featured a pleated hem and a contrasting black belt with a white camellia flower — a Chanel signature. Jennie accessorized the mini dress with black gloves, tights, and a choker. Keeping it casually chic, she went for pink glossy eyelids, rosy cheeks, and a nude terracotta lip. The lengths of her hair were pin-straight and kept out of her face with a stylish headband braid. As a nod to the Parisian fashion house, Jennie accessorized the hair look with a camellia pin for the perfect Chanel touch.
Chanel Girl, Jennie Kim
Jennie’s association with Chanel can be traced back to as early as 2017. The singer became the face of Chanel Beauty in Korea and was later appointed global brand ambassador. From then on, Jennie participated in several campaigns for the brand and graced a myriad of publications dressed in looks by the brand. Nowadays, she is recognized as one of Chanel’s it girls and has become a fixture at every event.
Most recently, Jennie was spotted at Chanel’s Fall-Winter 2023 show in a sleeveless tweet jumpsuit. To match the elegant, camelia-themed runway, her chic look was cinched at the waist with a pearl belt that centered around a singular camellia flower. The rapper stayed true to her edgy style by pairing this look with a handful of rings, black closed-toe pumps, and a chain-handled Chanel 22 bag.
Following the steps of her bandmate Rosé, Jennie becomes the second BLACKPINK member attending the event. In 2021, Rosé made history by becoming the first female K-pop idol to attend the fundraiser party — she shared the honor with the former 2NE1 star CL.
After scoring one of the most coveted invitations in the world of fashion, Jennie is proving her group’s industry prowess and her own status as part of the fashion elite. The singer is also making waves as an up-and-coming actress with the highly-anticipated release of The Idol, which will be premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
