From Earth to Mars, Coral Peña Welcomes Us to “For All Mankind” Season 5
In an alternate universe where the space race never ended, Apple TV’s original series For All Mankind (2019-) returns for Season 5, taking us back to the year 2012. Exploring the daily lives of those inhabiting Mars, this new season follows new missions, political disruptions, and a growing conflict between planets.
Among the crew is New York native Coral Peña, who plays Aleida Rosales. Raised on Earth by immigrant parents, Aleida is a determined character who doesn’t take no for an answer. Her potential is recognized early on by Margo Madison (Wren Schmidt), NASA’s first female Mission Control leader, engineer, and flight controller, who takes the young prodigy under her wing. Aleida has spent much of her life on Earth, working at NASA as an engineer and flight director before eventually becoming CEO of Helios Aerospace. Her journey ultimately leads her to Mars, where she helps lead the Titan mission, aiming to make her crew the first humans to reach the moon Titan and search for signs of life.
Peña spoke to EnVi via Zoom, sharing details about what’s next for Aleida’s future and the evolving world of Mars.
A Comforting Force
Aleida Rosales could be described as the embodiment of the American dream, driven by a deep love for space and a lifelong passion for engineering. She represents countless young people who grow up dreaming of careers in aerospace and exploring the Milky Way. Her loyalty and determination have opened doors throughout her life, making her someone others are drawn to work with. At the same time, her upbringing and past have left her with lasting wounds that do not easily fade. While some may see her as harsh or overly direct, this season, Aleida emerges as a source of hope.
When asked what we could expect from Aleida in the final episodes of season 5, Peña explained, “This season, I really wanted to make Aleida a comforting force, even in the way that she scares people. There’s something comforting about being around that woman that is scary, but you know she will fight for you.” Loyal and fighting for what is right, whether in the Happy Valley Colony or Earth, Coral added that “Aleida is someone who speaks in what she believes in and keeps fighting for that at all costs.”
A Battle Between Earth and Mars
This season, Aleida arrives at the Happy Valley colony on Mars to help launch the first all-human crewed mission to Saturn’s moon Titan. Representing the next phase of humanity’s future in space exploration, the Titan mission symbolizes a leap into what the next phase of life could look like on Earth and Mars. Aleida brings a strong sense of control and determination to ensure the mission launches successfully. While she navigates through difficult times of her own, Earth and Mars face even larger problems as political tensions escalate within the Happy Valley colony.
Aleida, knowing the growing problems happening between the planets, wants no involvement in the political turmoil. “With political decisions between Earth and Mars, Aleida wants to be actively left out,” Peña explains. “She keeps getting roped back in. What’s important to her is the safety of her people, particularly her crew. Aleida has gone through enough political events and just wants everyone to be okay.”
Where Is Home?
As concerns grow over limited supplies for the people of Mars amid the ongoing war between the two planets, questions arise about who gets to return to Earth and who chooses to stay on Mars. Petitions circulate throughout the colony, with many advocating for the right to freedom. When asked what Aleida would do about returning to Earth, Peña told EnVi, “Aleida is on Mars for better or worse, for as long as Titan takes. The people on the Titan mission left her with the responsibility of their lives, and she doesn’t break a promise.”
Grounded and once again loyal to her crew, Aleida is not someone who backs down from difficult situations. With Aleida’s family back on Earth and a life now rooted on Mars, Peña said, “Her life and her family are on Earth, but she feels this great responsibility to the future of space exploration.” Having endured significant hardships and close encounters with death, Aleida remains determined to protect those who have entrusted their lives to her, even if it means risking her own.
With season 5 concluding on May 29th, many fans are bracing themselves for what the future of Mars may hold. The final season of For All Mankind is set to premiere in 2027. Until then, don’t forget to give the show a re-run, and maybe learn a thing or two from Aleida’s resilience and advocacy.
