Six months after releasing their third mini album the Billage of perception: chapter two and lead single “RING ma Bell,” Billlie made their first 2023 comeback with the Billage of perception: chapter three. The mini album, which contains six tracks including title track “EUNOIA,” was released on March 28.

Becoming One in EUNOIA

Following Billlie’s streak of lore-heavy releases, the Billage of perception: chapter three is no different. However, while the collective soul and unconscious: chapter one and the Billage of perception: chapter two showcase the more imaginative side of their world, this release calls back to the events in the Billage of perception: chapter one, which is more grounded in the story’s reality, with little to no mystical elements. In a pre-release video called “‘enchanted night ~ 白夜’ : a prequel film of Billage of perception,” the septet — Moon Sua, Suhyeon, Haram, Tsuki, Sheon, Siyoon, and Haruna — gather in a house. As they make themselves at home, cherish their memories, and eventually come together at the rooftop — all shown in ambient, slow-motion shots — a man investigates the house, completely empty.

Adding to the group’s diverse soundscape is the title track “EUNOIA,” which fuses punk, Latin pop, and old-school hip-hop. “EUNOIA” is composed by PixelWave and YOUHA, with lyrics by Le’mon. The title comes from a Greek compound word meaning “‘well’ or ‘good’ and ‘mind’ or ‘feeling’.” Conceptually, it refers to “a feeling of goodwill (being friendly and wanting to help).” Similarly, in the song, Billlie sing of finding and cherishing the person that’s right for them — and ultimately accepting themselves. “You’re the only one precious in the world you / Tiki-taka, we’ll all go well with each other / flip flop flip flop (flip flop) / You’re blue, I’m purple / We become one, EUNOIA,” they sing.

The “EUNOIA” music video stays true to the song’s energy by combining pastel animations and montages of decorated Polaroid images. Clad in school uniforms and coordinated all-pink athletic clothing, the members happily dance together. Although the video is mostly cheerful, it ends on a darker note when the septet approaches a mysterious door. When the door opens, viewers are led into a scene in “‘enchanted night ~ 白夜’ : a prequel film of Billage of perception.”

Into the Billage

the Billage of perception: chapter three opens with “enchanted night ~ 白夜,” a song that blends disco and EDM. With synths that mimic the sound of rain, the upbeat track recounts a happy memory shared between friends. The mini album keeps its energy consistent with “lionheart (the real me),” a hard-hitting reggaeton-meets-trap track that showcases the members’ fierce side. As the song progresses, it alternates between Latin-inspired guitar strums, trap, and hip-hop beats.

Right after “EUNOIA” is “various and precious (moment of inertia),” a tribute song for their fans, Belllie’ve. The minGtion, Oiaisle, and JUNNY-produced track features lyrics written by the members themselves. In the song, they thank Bellie’ve for “painting their world:” “Bellie’ve you’re so special / ‘Cuz of you, we’re like no other / Mystic blue, violet fiction / You and I, we’re shining gold.” “extra-ordinary,” the fifth track, lays its foundation with a catchy bass riff before adding smooth disco instrumentals. Finally, the record wraps up with “nevertheless,” a track that highlights the members’ vocals as they give way to the experimental R&B and soul beat.

The signature mystical component of Billlie, however, doesn’t limit itself to their music and visuals alone. Belllie’ve online noticed some Easter eggs in the mini album’s presentation. When put in order of the track list, the first letters of each track’s title form the word “eleven” — an ever-recurring number in the Billlie universe. Additionally, while the record stops at six songs on streaming platforms, the physical version of the Billage of perception: chapter three provides a surprise.
