Hair flowing in the breeze; makeup done to perfection; and singing with voices of gold — FLO made New York their own at their Gov Ball After Dark show. Gov Ball After Dark brings more intimate shows to fans throughout the weekend of Gov Ball from June 6 to June 11. For the uninitiated, FLO are a three-piece girl R&B group hailing from the United Kingdom. While they are best known for hits like their 2022 debut single “Cardboard Box,” they are now cementing themselves as leaders in the R&B space.

Although the members Stella, Jorja, and Reneé are only in their early twenties (and early in their musical career), FLO exude the confidence of a band who has been in the game for years. With such an impressive roster of songs, the group received co-signs from industry giants like Missy Elliot and SZA. After making their Gov Ball debut, FLO offered the night of the summer with a fierce Gov Ball After Dark set at Sony Hall on June 7.

Getting it Started with DJ CHVMELEON

The night was young as fans piled into the venue, anxiously waiting for FLO to arrive on stage. There was a healthy mix of fans sporting Gov Ball wristbands and fans who had not attended the festival. During the wait, fans enjoyed sounds by DJ CHVMELEON. Attendees were brought to the club with seamless mixes of songs like “Like That” by Future, Metro Boomin, and Kendrick Lamar and “The Boy is Mine” by Brandy and Monica. Around 12:30 a.m. on June 8, FLO hit the stage. Fans began screaming with phones lifted in the air to capture the performance.

Fly Girls Do It Best

The members sported two-piece brown chrome sets sewn with reptile skin and leather fabrics. Despite commanding the attention of thousands at Gov Ball earlier in the day, there was a certain charm about seeing the group perform in such an intimate and decadent venue like Sony Hall. Starting off the night with tracks like “Not My Job,” FLO were off to a strong start. They continued to ramp up the energy, but the group never lost focus. It was so easy to be captivated by the music and dancing. Harkening back to the ‘90s, FLO channeled the energy of groups like Destiny’s Child with flawless vocals throughout the night.

Fans got to hear songs like their charming Missy Elliot collaboration track “Fly Girl.” Paired with background dancers who performed with 200% energy, FLO matched their vibe with fierce choreography. The members’ vocal clarity was impressive as they breezed through each high note on records such as “Walk Like This.” Of course it wouldn’t be a FLO set without a mix of ‘90s classics, including their rendition of “Bootylicious” by Destiny’s Child. And as the night progressed, the group continued to interact with fans, taking phones for selfies and waving flags from fans.

With every performance, Flo managed to exceed their last — and Gov Ball After Dark was no exception. After all, the members agreed that this set was “Better than Gov Ball,” while fans ramped up their excitement and their cheers for the group, who gave their all.
