Whether you keep up with girl group activities or not, you have most likely seen the pink dress that K-pop idols are wearing right now. Be it in a comeback teaser, a music video or magazine shoots, this pink cut-out dress from the Italian fashion brand Diesel is instantly recognizable. It also makes a perfect addition to fashion’s recent Y2K revival. And, given how many celebrities are reaching for this piece, its popularity might be only comparable to that of the Miu Miu micro skirt set.
The Idols
Perhaps the first time K-pop fans were introduced to the pink dress was in July 2022, when rapper CL debuted the baby pink outfit on her Instagram. Matched with barrettes of the same color and sleek blonde hair, CL looked like a modern-day barbie — a look fitting of 2022’s barbiecore trend.
The Diesel piece then resurfaced when aespa’s Karina wore it on the cover of ViVi Magazine. With her sleek visuals and purple-toned hair, Karina was fawned over on all social media platforms. More recently, fellow SM Entertainment star Joy was seen wearing the dress in teasers for Red Velvet’s most recent comeback, “Birthday.” The singer paired the dress with furry pink boots from Giuseppe Zanotti, complementing the pink car on set. Joy has a history of making iconic dresses go viral online, and this time was no different — fans of the group loved everything about the outfit.
On November 24, renowned girl group KARA released “WHEN I MOVE,” their latest title track. The single was dropped ahead of the group’s comeback to celebrate their fifteenth anniversary. Member Youngji can be seen wearing the Diesel dress in the music video, paired with a hot pink cropped jacket.
The Dress
Diesel debuted the M-Arcey Mini Dress with their Fall Winter 2022 collection in February. Since then, the item has popped up all over the pop culture scene, from editorial shoots to celebrity Instagram posts.
The dress has developed a reputation of being somewhat iconic, thanks to its metallic sheen and the large “D” brand logo. Its bodycon silhouette contrasts with the soft pink color, finding the perfect balance between the traditionally feminine aesthetic and modern empowered energy.
And K-pop idols are not the only ones obsessed with this baby pink dream. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion, singer Rina Sawayama, and model Suhyun Lee are some of the names that have rocked the dress in different contexts, adding their own vibe to the versatile piece.
The Brand
This year, the Italian label Diesel has experienced renewed success. Glenn Martens, who joined the brand in 2020, has revolutionized Diesel since his induction, most notably through the success of the 1DR bag. The chic purse and the viral M-Arcey Mini Dress represent the start of a new era for the brand. As Lyst reports, Diesel managed to revive their image with a new mission — decrease its environmental impact while continuing to produce disruptive, trendy styles — attracting the attention of today’s most influential celebrities. As we head into 2023, Diesel’s newfound popularity, under Martens’ influence, promises to launch the brand into the fashion mainstream.
