Fall is right around the corner, which means deep, rich brown hair is making its annual comeback. American actor Lily Collins revitalized her preexisting brown locks for the premiere of the Netflix series Emily In Paris (season 4, part 1). The star achieved the hair look with the help of celebrity colorist Jacob Schwartz. The master colorist is responsible for maintaining the hair of other brunette celebrities, including  Bella Hadid, Dakota Johnson, and Lana Del Rey

Read on to learn everything you need to know about brunette hair; how to achieve Lily Collins’ “dark suede brunette” look and find inspiration for your brunette fall hairstyle.

Brunette Hair & Fall

Brunette hair has long been associated with the coming of fall. In most places around the world, this time of year starts with pumpkin-flavored treats, crisp autumn leaves, and cozy knitwear. Thus, the marketing phenomenon often transcends into the beauty scene and results in warm brown hair trends. This pattern repeats every year with trends such as the 2021 caramel ribbon and 2023’s subtle cinnamon

With that being said, this year, hair color trends steered away from the traditional direction and embraced more homogenous color design and cooler tones. The reason? Perhaps the influx of silver jewelry and cool-toned makeup, as spotted on runways and social media. Something to note is that silver jewelry has been related to chic and minimalist aesthetics (remember this for later!)

Lily Collins’ Dark Suede Brunette

Now that we’ve briefed the association between the fall season and brunette hair, let’s discuss Lily Collins’ elevated cool brown hairstyle. Celebrity hairstylist Jacob Schwartz coined her new hue “dark suede brunette” because it has a shiny and expensive finish — just like silver, we dare to say. The master colorist designed her hair to be dark, cool and dimensional. Despite the use of multiple colors, dark suede brunette presents itself as more homogenous than former fall hair trends. In Schwartz’s words, “It’s a chic classic brunette.”

Schwartz created dark suede brunette with the Schwarzkopf IGORA VIBRANCE line. He deepened Collins’ hairline and roots with the dark, ash-brown dye. The mixture of colors added depth without creating a warm halo. Then, Schwartz coated the rest of her hair with a rich carob brown mixture. Keep in mind, this second color was just a notch lighter than the root color. The slight color difference created a delicate ombre on Collins’ hair. As an added boost, Olaplex Bond Multiplier No 1 was mixed into the hair dye to strengthen the lengths.

The IGORA VIBRANCE line features a Moisture Protecting Complex with AQUAXYL™ Technology. Due to the moisturizing technology, the demi-permanent dye strengthens the inner structure of hair follicles and protects against breakage.

Pro Tip: Due to its homogeneous look, “dark suede brunette” requires less maintenance than most hair trends. However, dyed hair always needs additional care to prevent further damage. Hair masks and leave-in treatments are recommended for those who swim or expose their hair to tap water often.

Brunette Inspo

Since Collins’ hair is setting trends and offering brunette inspo, we had to take a look at global celebrities and their takes on brunette hair. Keep scrolling to find hair color inspiration for the season.

Freen & Becky

Thai actresses Sarocha Chankimha (also known as Freen) and Becky Patricia Armstrong (best known as Becky) have embraced the brown hair agenda with their lengthy, chocolate-colored hair. And they reinvent it for every occasion. At the Central World Opening Party for the Singaporean lifestyle brand Beyond The Vines, for example, they opted for straight fringe and pigtail braids hairstyles. Their hair encapsulated the silky straight hair trend and the fun hairstyles of the early aughts.

Heart Evangelista

From her chic bob to her pearl blonde color, Filipino socialite and entrepreneur Heart Evangelista has always stepped out of her comfort zone. Despite the various looks, she has recently sported long, umber hair. Similar to Collins’, Evanglista’s hair appears to be homogenous butt dimensional. However, her dimension comes from very subtle highlights running vertically through the hair. Evangelista’s specific hair color is another way to achieve a chic and expensive look.

Shanaya Kapoor

Indian actress Shanya Kapoor showcased her chestnut brown waves in a slew of selfies on Instagram. Pivoting from Bollywood glamour, she wore a white floral dress and voluminous waves. Just like Schwartz’s “dark suede brunette,” Kapoor’s hair featured a subtle ombre, a pronounced color shift and warm ends that complimented Kapoor’s olive skin tone and strawberry makeup.

Macarena García Romero

Mexican actor Macarena García Romero snapped a few pictures for Instagram showcasing a Fendi FW24 outfit. Her fashion focussed on cozy knits and plaid prints
— all suitable for fall — but we narrowed our lens on her brunette hair. Similar to Collins’, García Romero’s hair was a deep, homogenous shade of brown. Her wavy locks knocked Collins’ “dark suede brunette” color one notch deeper, achieving an autumnal appeal.

Fall 2024 is going to be the “dark suede brunette” season. Today, the second part of Emily In Paris’ season four will be on screens and fans will be treated to more style and beauty inspiration from Lily Collins. But, as proven by celebrities from around the world, you can join this color hair trend in your own way. Would you try “dark suede brunette” hair?
