Sunday Spin: New Releases From Johnny Huynh, Faouzia, 4EVE, Son Tung M-TP, and hongjoin

Faouzia – “Birthday”

It’s been six months since Faouzia’s debut album FILM NOIR was released, but she never stopped writing. The first outcome of her constant state of creativity is “Birthday” — but the song is no celebration. Retelling the tale of a lost love, Faouzia describes her regret of the relationship like burning “cigarettes pressed to [her] face.”

In the music video,  Faouzia stands adorned in white lace in a picturesque field, reflecting on what once was and what has become. In the chorus, speaking directly to her ex, she sings, “I gave you all of your power / I wrapped it in a bow for your birthday / Your friends act like you’re famous now / And I’m like, ‘Alright, okay.’” Though evidently not pleased with the outcome of what she hoped would be lifelong love, Faouzia is relinquishing any feelings she was holding onto in this track, not allowing any page to go unwritten.

“Birthday” comes only a month after Faouzia’s world tour announcement. She will be departing for Europe in June and, after a performance at Lollapalooza, traveling across North America all August.

Johnny Huynh – “Heaven’s On Fire”

Seattle-born Vietnamese American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Johnny Huynh is here to make a statement with his long-awaited debut album, HEAVEN’S ON FIRE. Johnny shared in a press release that “HEAVEN’S ON FIRE is about the moments where beauty and pain exist at the same time. You can be surrounded by love and hope and still feel like everything is burning around you. Every song on this album came from one of those moments.” The album’s lead single and namesake is a full-on embodiment of the project’s sentiment.

“Heaven’s On Fire” is an alternative pop song with electronic and rock nuances. The song consistently references heaven and hell, acknowledging the toxicity of the relationship he’s in, but basking in the desires that continuously draw him in. Johnny sings, “Your touch takes me higher, then drops me to Earth / Your paradise is my pleasure, my curse / An angel and a demon, your lips just keep on feeding the flame.” Johnny’s powerful vocal delivery and honest lyricism make for a song that is burning with desire and passion.

Rocco – “perfect song to slow dance to”

After a ten-month music hiatus, Rocco has made a comeback — and excitingly enough, on his birthday! Last year, Rocco released his debut album, Skin & Bone, in June and set off on the Smoking Gun tour in the summer and fall. After that, however, the artist says he hit a bit of a wall, writing on Instagram, “To be completely vulnerable, these last ten months were quite the challenge. I was stuck a lot, couldn’t create, and wasn’t sure of things. But whatever, that’s lame. What is cool, though, is amazing people who’ve helped bring out the best of me – ya know who you are. Things always get better.”

With “perfect song to slow dance to,” Rocco shows both his softer side and how vulnerable he feels in love. Seemingly written about his public relationship, the track goes over his dedication to the one that he loves and wants to dance with for the rest of his life. The warmly-lit music video that accompanies the song shows Rocco and model Andrea Stoker as they act through the calm life of two people in love — laughing in the yard, brushing their teeth together, and slow dancing included. Is it reality, or is it only the fantasy of Rocco’s character that we learn about in the song’s trailer? The plot is only beginning, and “perfect song to slow dance to” acts as the introduction, so we are sure to see more of the story soon.

Milena – “Telescope”

In her signature jazzy fashion, Milena has returned and brought all the retro vibes with her. In her “Telescope” visualizer, the singer can be seen walking along roads, oceans, and parks. As she does so,  she expresses her desire to live her life her way instead of through the lens of someone else. Animated flowers bloom around her as Milena sings, “Stop looking through a telescope / Searching for something I don’t even want at all, now I know / Flowers blooming round me, beautiful / Just like you who are standing next to me.”

Fully content with her life and dreams, she walks along as the green screen location behind her switches so that she is walking along other people’s memories. Prior to the filming of the visualizer, Milena asked fans to submit videos of their happiest memories. These videos now show up three minutes in as Milena watches them fly past her, showcasing moments of joy and contentment from others as well.

Son Tung M-TP & Tyga – “Come My Way”

What do you get when one of V-pop’s most recognized artists joins forces with a multi-platinum West Coast rap star? Son Tung M-TP and Tyga’s newest single, “Come My Way,” demonstrates how modern music transcends cultures and highlights talent from all parts of the world. Both of Vietnamese heritage, these two superstars flaunt their abilities on a traditional Vietnamese folk music-infused Afrobeat track, resulting in a song that is irresistible to dance to. In a press release, Son Tung M-TP’s team revealed that “the project serves as a heartfelt tribute to the homeland that shaped him [Son Tung M-TP], while also inviting global audiences to discover the richness, beauty, and spirit of Vietnamese culture through music.”

Son Tung M-TP and Tyga approach “Come My Way” with an effortless swagger and charisma that represent their status in music. Son Tung M-TP’s melodic vocals create a dynamic balance with the addictive drum rhythms, whilst Tyga’s flow naturally blends into the song’s momentum-building second verse. “Come My Way” is a confession of love — they not only describe their abundance of feelings, but express their desire to invite them into their lives. The music video is just as dynamic as the song itself, with visuals that pay homage to their shared Vietnamese culture and are fused with the opulence of modern nightlife.

KRYSTAL – “PWLT”

KRYSTAL of iconic second-generation K-pop group f(x) is finally back in the music scene after a decade. “PWLT” is her second solo single and the second cut from her highly anticipated debut album. The song title is an acronym of “people want to live together” — representing how she questions the phenomenon of love and connection. “PWLT” is an ethereal, sophisti-pop romance song brought to life by a star-studded lineup of talent. Kuo-Hung Tseng of famed Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster provides impeccable guitar work, while HYUKOH’s very own frontman, Oh Hyuk, adds depth with synths.

The song’s slow, soulful vibe is an ode to the origins of R&B pop. In order to accurately capture the ambience of an era that defined modern music, KRYSTAL joined forces with legendary American producer and songwriter Steve Lindsey. Lindsey’s catalogue includes credits for musical pioneers like Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, and Chaka Khan. The music video plays into the nostalgia even further with a vintage title card, shimmering visuals shot on film, and a glamorous retro wardrobe reminiscent of pop divas like Cher.

STARGLOW – “Good Boys Anthem”

STARGLOW is showing how kindness and consideration for others is what true rock spirit is about. Their new single “Good Boys Anthem” has a grunge rock sound that captures the growing pains and tensions brought about by adolescence. Teens and young adults often have rebellious reputations frowned upon by older generations, but in “Good Boys Anthem,” STARGLOW seeks to set the record straight. Despite the strong emotions expressed in the song, the singers encourage listeners to “Begin with respect, end with respect.”

In the music video, the members are shown having conflicts with each other, from verbal to physical fights. Though STARGLOW’s styling and roles may portray them in a rebellious light, their true characters are quickly revealed. After members TAIKI and GOICHI are ganged up on, ADAM, KANON, and RUI show up to defend them. Regardless of their differences, they show how their tight-knit friendship is much more valuable. “It’s not what you wear it’s how you live,” are the lyrics that embody this song’s message. Through “Good Boys Anthem,” STARGLOW reminds us to always act with sincere empathy, as “In times like these, everybody’s got a story.”

4EVE – “TEA”

Thai group 4EVE are back with a funky bass single, “TEA,” that’s sure to become an earworm. 4EVE dressed in suits for the music video, moving around a diner in two long continuous camera shots. They dance with sharp hand gestures and act out a gossip session between close friends. For 4EVE, tea serves as a symbol for their desires in a relationship. Rather than beat around the bush, the members express their wants directly. “I want the pearl and the necklace /  Never mind, I want it all, bitch, you guessed it,” they declare in the second verse.

With each whistle from the kettle and mimed drinking motion with pinkies lifted, 4EVE shows they are craving that hot tea. The members assert they are ready for the next progression of intimacy in a relationship, encouraging their lover to take action in the lyrics: “Getting hot and heavy, you’re hot, I’m ready.” Despite the seeming urgency of the situation, 4EVE refuses to rush, choosing to savor the moment, “Leave it in, let it steep.” For those looking for a low key but sensual song, “TEA” offers up the perfect cup.

hongjoin – “Universe”

Singaporean soloist hongjoin has released his first full-length album, CLOCKWORK. Through an Instagram caption, the singer revealed that the album’s twelve songs function as the twelve hours on the clock, each telling its own story of time. “Universe,” the tenth track, displays hongjoin’s yearning for a lover through a ballad. Celestial images and references are heavily present throughout CLOCKWORK, used by hongjoin to show that even the vast depths of space cannot stop his love.

Hongjoin draws inspiration from Antoine De Saint-Exupéry’s novel The Little Prince (which he pays homage to further by wearing the titular character’s signature outfit). Just as the Little Prince traveled far after being hurt by the rose he loved, so too does hongjoin wander after losing his lover. “It don’t matter the distance / Let me look into your mind,” he proclaims, hoping to rekindle their relationship. Hongjoin’s life revolved around his lover; without her, he feels lost: “Losing out on gravity, just tell me it’s real / I know how I feel whenever I look into your eyes.” Despite the uncertainties of the vast universe, hongjoin knows this love is meant to last and asks his lover to give them another chance.
