Each year, the first Monday of May marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute spring exhibition. To commemorate the occasion, A-listers from across industries gather at the fundraiser event best known as the Met Gala. The grand night, celebrated annually, brings fashion to the forefront to provide the Costume Institute with funding for annual exhibitions, operations, acquisitions and preservation of pieces.
Titled “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” this year’s exhibition features over 250 historical sleeping beauties — fashion items too precious to be worn again due to their extreme fragility. Accordingly, the dress code for the Met Gala, “The Garden of Time,” was meant to highlight the ephemeral nature of fashion — a theme open to interpretations, of course.
