Bad Binch TONGTONG Creates An Alternate Dimension at NYFW
You’ve seen Bad Binch TONGTONG on icons like Lady Gaga, Cardi B, and Jennifer Coolidge. After winning the 2026 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Genesis House Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Design and Innovation Grant, Terrence Zhou has been on a remarkable streak with his latest Spring Summer 2027 collection. Returning to the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) runway after two years, his background in mathematics and engineering continues to lend itself to his gravity-defying garments.
On a Thursday afternoon by the South Street Seaport, an enchanting show unfolded like no other. In partnership with the iconic Balloon Museum, guests made their way through the venue’s current exhibit “DAYDREAM – Air Becomes Art.” From life-sized inflatable spike balls to a snowy field of grass, each room brought a new experience that engaged all five senses in a way one simple enter/exit door could never. Beyond the vision of creating aesthetic fashion, each piece was a love letter to contemporary art that celebrated maximalism in its finest form.
The Art of Space and Time
As the hovering lights dimmed in the museum’s 10 Agosto room, classical string music began to play, which had everyone holding their breath. There was a silent but calming presence about each model’s walk around the installation’s 360° stage, as if they were orbiting the audience to a different planet.
Bad Binch TONGTONG’s collection opened with a section of neon pieces that offered a renewed image of his signature avant-garde shapes. While Zhou’s recognizable floating disks are known to add more drama, they were also interpreted in a more casual manner. It acted as a subtle statement on the bottom of basics like skirts and shift dresses, reimagining the practicality of structured forms in fashion.
But Zhou knows when to stand out, as circular cages and cylinder shapes hit the floor. Styled with complementary colored tights, he successfully took a creative spin on how to take your own bite out of the Big Apple.
Suddenly, titanium silver face masks brought an alien takeover to the floor — and we’re here for it. While most fashion show glam tends to lean towards showcasing the entirety of one’s face, it was a unique way to carry the collection’s story that oozed a futuristic and bold message.
As the show continued, an elegant leeway brought in a series of vibrant feather pieces with flair. It was as close as the audience would get to watching a peacock shed its old skin and step into a new light, with eyes watching over the reinterpretation of traditional fur garments. If a lily pad made a wish to be human, it would look exactly like Zhou’s pink and green dress.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get more major, rapper Saweetie made a surprise appearance and graced the audience for the collection’s finale. Stunning in a light green ballroom gown, the star carried the essence of a princess that effortlessly brought in everyone’s attention. She finished by taking her rightful place on the main stage, while every model filed behind each other and, one by one, traversed around the center of Zhou’s playful universe.
Through Bad Binch TONGTONG’s runway story, Zhou threaded a vital and universal message that there’s peace in infinity.
