Mattel Honors Mexican Singer Juan Gabriel with New Collectible Barbie Doll
On August 28, Mattel announced the newest addition to its Music Series. Ahead of Latinx Heritage Month, the American toy company shared its Barbie Signature Juan Gabriel Collectible Doll. The new doll is an homage to Juan Gabriel, his impact on fashion and his legacy as one of Latin America’s greatest music icons.

Juan Gabriel, a Mexican singer-songwriter and actor, was a trend-setting performer who rose to stardom in the 1970s. His instantly recognizable, flamboyant style and unabashed authenticity set him apart in the Mexican and Latin American music scene. Nicknamed “Juanga,” the singer is popularly recognized for his contributions to música ranchera, ballad, mariachi and pop music. Juan Gabriel also celebrated his individuality from the beginning of his career. Through his contributions to pop culture, the musician carved his place into Latin American — and global — history.
Barbie Honors Juan Gabriel
Now, Barbie is honoring Juanga with a signature doll inspired by his bold fashion. Designed by Angel Kent, the doll wears a glimmering black bodysuit decorated with gold accents and a mariachi-inspired cropped jacket. Specifically, the doll’s outfit closely resembles the iconic look Juan Gabriel sported for his 1990 performance at the Instituto de Bellas Artes en México. Considered a watershed moment in Mexican music history, this concert was initially met with skepticism from traditionalists, who argued that Juan Gabriel’s take on popular music was unfitting for a fine arts venue. The Mexican legend, however, catapulted his influence with a memorable performance that revisited his greatest hits.
Additional nods to Juan Gabriel’s iconic stage look included his favorite accessory, a bolo tie, and a microphone. Further referencing the artist’s lavish fashion, the doll also wears golden drop earrings and open-toe heels.
The Barbie Music Series is a collection of signature dolls that pay homage to notable musicians. Previous inspirations for dolls include Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner and Stevie Nicks, all of whom played a role in shaping the modern music industry. With the introduction of the Juanga-inspired Barbie, Mattel expands its portfolio in recognition of one of Latin America’s most admirable entertainers, just in time to commemorate the anniversary of his death and ahead of Latinx Heritage Month celebrations.
