February is not always about heart-shaped gifts or confessions. On February 17, Korean-American singer-songwriter, RIKA, challenged the overly-romantic air surrounding Valentine’s season with her latest single, “Cupid.” The rising artist’s most recent release is an anti-Valentine anthem for all the heartbroken.

Done Being Your Valentine

RIKA is not one to mope and bask in heartache; rather, she transformed heartache into art with her lyricism. TubbyTMU composed and produced the track, and Nomichit, who mixed and mastered RIKA’s debut EP, was also responsible for the same duties on “Cupid.” With the likes of all three creatives together came a sultry breakup single that was simultaneously powerful.

This song shares the story of being in a relationship with someone who only causes harm. In a bittersweet tone, RIKA parts ways with her ex-lover as she tells them, “Don’t call me cupid ‘cause I’m done being your valentine.” But “Cupid” is not about getting revenge; it is about being the bigger person and walking away with your head held high. RIKA is as classy as ever as she details her heartbreak while taking the high road.
