Just like every year, the 2024 Annual Venice Film Festival brought the film industry together to introduce new cinema masterpieces. The event unfolded between August 28 and September 7, delivering conversation topics aplenty — which film stole the critics’ hearts? who is this year’s rising film star? and of course, will this certain film get nominated to the Academy Awards?
But not everything is about cinema. Though certainly, films are at the core of the event, in this day and era no major film festival is complete without spectacular fashion. Venice, particularly, has earned a reputation for serving as the perfect backdrop for stars to display fresh-from-the-oven couture creations — the festival conveniently takes place after Couture Week.
Understandably, movie screenings, red carpets and even water taxis had all eyes on them as la crème de la crème of culture and entertainment turned the cinema summit into a runway. From the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega to Turkish style darling Hande Erçel and everyone else who caught our attention and earned our praises, find below EnVi’s selection of best-dressed stars at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Jenna Ortega in Dior
Kicking off the event on a high note, American actor Jenna Ortega stepped out in Venice for the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Following the trend of red dresses on the red carpet that we’ve witnessed since the start of the year, the star opted for a red tulle Dior gown. The dress was specially tailored for the event and, according to Dior, it took 600 hours of atelier work to create. Jenna beautifully accessorized her look with pieces from Dior Joaillerie, which she is an ambassador of.
Cate Blanchett in Louis Vuitton
Academy Award-winning actor Cate Blanchett, who leads the cast of Disclaimer, walked the (second!) red carpet of the Apple TV+ series in head-to-toe Louis Vuitton. For the occasion, Cate donned a custom white dress featuring a cape, tulle embroidery and a silk bustier. The Australian-American star paired the look with pumps and high jewelry pieces from the LV Diamond collection.
Hoyeon Jung in Louis Vuitton
As part of Disclaimer’s main cast, South Korean actor Hoyeon Jung attended the show’s (first) red carpet on August 30. Hoyeon, who is a Louis Vuitton ambassador and was making her debut appearance in the City of Water, wore a metallic red dress for the event. Clearly updated with the latest trends, the star matched her dress with flowing red hair for the ultimate beauty statement. (ICYMI, red hair tones have been all the rage since last December!)
Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge
Pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo hard launched her relationship at the premiere of Disclaimer — starring Olivia’s beau, actor Louis Partridge. And, of course, she did it in style. The singer wore a ‘90s-leaning slip dress by Rodarte and accessorized with dark sunglasses and a black clutch. The “good 4 u” singer’s look tapped into some of the most popular trends of 2023, from rosettes to Vampy red lipstick, perfectly balancing old-school glamour and modern sensibilities.
Channeling the same energy, Louis Partridge opted for an ensemble fitting of any ‘90s heartthrob. The customized suit, courtesy of Prada, featured an untucked vanilla shirt, a black mohair suit, derby shoes and dark sunglasses for an additional touch of cool.
And in case you’re wondering, yes, we love a couple who dresses the part.
Lady Gaga in Dior
Perhaps no one in entertainment delivers red-carpet extravagance like Lady Gaga. Her Venice Film Festival appearance on the Joker: Folie à Deux red carpet rightfully made the rounds on the internet. Gaga, who stars in the third leading role of her career alongside Joaquin Phoenix, was outfitted by Dior. Her black haute couture gown featured a plunging neckline bustier and a massive skirt with oversized folds. The outfit, which took overall 850 hours to complete, was ultimately topped off with vintage Philip Treacy headwear and diamond Tiffany & Co. jewelry. Trés chic!
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu in Erdem and Pomellato
French actor Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu took a late-summer approach to red-carpet dressing to attend the premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Queer. The Emily in Paris star stunned in a floral dress from Erdem’s Fall Winter 2024 collection and a pair of metallic shoes. Philippine added accents with pavé jewelry from Pomellato, including round earrings, two statement rings and a cuff to achieve modern but sophisticated Italian splendor.
Hande Erçel in Elie Saab and Pomellato
No stranger to film festival grandeur — she has previously emerged as one of the most relevant stars at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival — Turkish style icon Hande Erçel couldn’t be absent from La Biennale. Hande, who is a prominent friend of the Italian jeweler Pomellato, arrived at the Ca’ d’Oro to support Pomellato’s “Preserving Vision” project. The screen queen looked regal in an Elie Saab dress, fitting for a night of Venetian elegance that celebrated the efforts to preserve one of Venice’s greatest architectural treasures. To further enhance her outfit, Hande sported a Pomellato choker and matching earrings. Talk about A-plus style!
Isabela Merced’s Black Velvet Dress
Peruvian American actor Isabela Merced made a showstopping red carpet appearance at the Babygirl red carpet. The Madame Web star had all eyes on her when she arrived in a sweetheart neckline dress, beautifully styled with Chopard jewelry and full glam by Armani Beauty.
Tim Burton and Monica Bellucci
Olivia Rodrigo and Louis Partridge were not the only couple enjoying the spotlight at the Venice Film Festival. Cinema powerhouses Tim Burton and Monica Bellucci also stepped out in La Serenissima for the screening of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The couple opted for coordinated outfits: a black suit by Dior for Tim and a body-hugging custom dress by Vivienne Westwood for Monica. The pair looked stylish (but mysterious), dressed in matching dark sunglasses and calmly posing for the cameras. Frankly, a match made in heaven!
