Castle in the Sky (1986)

Pazu’s life changes when Sheeta, a young orphan being chased by a gang of pirates and a military officer, floats down from the sky thanks to a magic amulet around her neck. That same amulet has the power to uncover Laputa, a legendary city in the sky with treasures beyond your wildest imagination, and everyone is after it!

Ponyo (2008)

This list wouldn’t be complete without Ponyo. The story follows a young goldfish princess, Brunhilde (renamed Ponyo), as she ventures into the human world, where she meets Souske, a five-year-old boy. As the two grow closer, Ponyo becomes more and more human.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

With much lower stakes than the other films on this list, My Neighbor Totoro follows sisters Satsuke and Mei. When we first meet them, they have just moved to a new country home with their father and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their mother, who is recuperating from an illness at the hospital. In the meantime, they explore the area around them and befriend the playful spirits of the forest, including the fuzzy and cuddly Totoro.

The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)

Arrietty and her family of tiny, 10-inch humans secretly live in a suburban home. Based on Mary Norton’s novel, The Borrowers, the story follows Arrietty as she befriends a boy named Sho, breaking the family’s rule of remaining hidden at all times. While the friendship is exciting and full of heart, it also endangers Arrietty and her family.
