Hailed as one of the acts bringing music back to the golden days of hip-hop, ScarLip is the Bronx born and raised rapper breathing new life into New York. Her voice is impossible to forget, with a growl in her delivery paired with infectious heavy hitting beats. Finding success with the record “This Is New York,” the 23-year-old rapper sparked a trend of netizens remixing the song to rep their own cities. And with co-signs from hip-hop legends like Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg, she’s found an audience in New York. That was clear as day when she performed a heavy-hitting set to an energetic crowd at SOB’s on June 17th.
So Hot on a Monday Night
With sounds from the prolific DJ SUSS ONE ahead of ScarLip’s set, fans lost themselves in the music. It was a night filled with twerking and fun. One word to describe the night? Electric. As ScarLip entered the stage, fans went into a frenzy, hoping to get even the slightest interaction with the Bronx rapper. Many screamed her name or told her that they love them. She breezed through her sets with intense choreography and flawless breath control. Joined by dancers, together they brought the heat to SOB’s with songs like “She’s Hot” and “No Statements.”
Cleotrapa and Kenzo B Make Appearances
Now more than ever, Black women have been bringing fresh perspectives and music to the rap scene. An industry long dominated by men is now seeing a boom of exciting women who are topping charts and cultural conversations. Of course ScarLip’s show was no different as she shared the stage with New York talents Cleotrapa and Kenzo B. Cleotrapa was the first of the two to grace the stage, performing her latest single “Von Dutch.” Her starpower was undeniable. Reaching her hands out to fans, she made sure to reciprocate the love from fans who were eager to see her.
Part of what makes Cleotrapa so exciting is the ease in which she maneuvers through alternative soundscapes and rap. Reminiscent of greats like Missy Elliot, she is certainly a rapper to keep eyes on.
Following Cleotrapa’s performance, ScarLip brought fellow Bronx native starlet Kenzo B to the stage, who performed “BFFR” from her 2023 EP, Top 2 Not 2. Oozing charisma as she breezed through the song, she proved her spot as an artist on the rise in New York. Though she only performed one song, the crowd wanted more after listening to the infectious hook, “So what? Yeah I said it!”
She’s Hot!
There wasn’t a better way to spend a night during Black Music Month than to witness the impressive talents of ScarLip. And as she continues to navigate her newfound fame and grow in the music industry, the only way is up for her.
